Another New Year!

In first grade, Alexis is required to put her name on all of her papers. She is often required to put the date. She comes home often, announcing, "I know what today is - it is December 15th," or whatever date it might be.

I have, on occasion, asked - totally seriously, "Alexis - what is the date?" And completely relied on whatever answer she has given me.

This is a little screwy - me depending on my six year old daughter to tell me the date. It's frightening even - if I think too much about it - that I totally believe this child .... the same child that proudly announced to me a few days ago, "Guess how long I've been wearin' these same underwear?" You don't want to know the answer to that, but it was quite the shock! And ... even more disturbing that she was, for some reason, going for a record of some sort.

She is not the one - anyone - should be relying on for the correct time, the day of the week, the month of the year or ... the date!

But ... I have been known to do this - from time to time, because somewhere along the way, I lost enough space in my brain to store the daily date. I often forget it and even lose complete days altogether - really throwing off my ability to calculate the date accurately. Alexis isn't storing all that much important stuff in her brain yet - I have come to depend on her to help me out. It's working out just swell.

It will take me weeks - possibly even into February, until I become accustomed to writing 2008 - and have it finally burnt into my brain. This is probably true of a lot of people. It's just hard to get used to writing the new year and just as difficult to comprehend that it is actually here.

Well ... it is! It is the year 2008!

I want to wish everyone a Very Happy New Year that is filled with much happiness, much prosperity, many friends and tons of love. And ... days and days and days filled with hugs and kisses from your precious children or grandchildren. And ... days and days and days filled with laughter and giggles and smiles. And ... days and days and days where you look back fondly to remember the Joy shared with those that you love and look forward with bright eyes and an open heart filled with excitement and anticipation of the Joy to come.

I wish this for you ... and for me and those that I love, as well.

Have a happy and blessed New Year, Kellan! I, too, have trouble remembering dates...actually ANYTHING pertaining to numbers goes clear out of my head in 2 1/2 seconds. I guess that's why I married an engineer...he's my walking/talking personal calculator and computer. (HE remembers our anniversary while I have to look it up on the engraving in my wedding band!) God bless.

May 2008 bring you all your wish for and many more blessings.
I have trouble remembering what day it is too , let alone the date.

I can't add anything to that list. I wish all of those things for you and yours.

You and your blog have truly been a blessing to me this year. Finding the upside on everything is not always easy, the fact you make it silly, funny or poignant makes it's even more worth it.

To you and yours, Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! I hope i is wonderful for you and your family!

Ashlyn asked me the date the other day and I couldn't even tell her what day of the week it was! I lose complete track when I am not working daily! I will have a hard time remembering to write 2008 with the date when school starts again...my class will laugh at their silly teacher who can't get the date right!

And Happy New Year to you and yours, too, Kellan!

I do this, too, with my daughter. She is simply amazed that a new year begins when she wakes in the morning. Oh, to be so young again!

Hey Kellan, I have been known to still write 2006. I guess I never got comfortable with 2007, I am just better with even numbers. :)

Happy New Year to you as well!

And I can't wait until I can rely on Emily to tell me the date. I can tell you the day of the week, but not having much opportunity to need to bother with the DATE, I'm clueless when it comes time, most times, to know it. Glad to know I'm not the only one!

I do, however, know today's date! LOL

PS HILARIOUS about the underwear bit! My middle child informed me, about three weeks ago, that he was going to wear his Scooby Doo underwear forever. When I informed me we only wear underwear ONCE and then put on a clean pair, he said, "Well, I guess I'd better take these off then." When asked how long he'd been wearing them, he said, "I don't know!" I did an underwear count in the laundry (four days worth of laundry) and there wasn't a single pair of his underwear in there. SIGH... But there were 6 pairs of pants and 11 shirts (from only four days...); does that make it better???? LOL

A very happy New Year to you Kellan. I had to laugh at this post, because I often ask my kids the date or I just don't know until I post in my blog. Us moms have way too many other things stuffed in out brains I think.

Happy New Year! I rely on my son Jack to tell me where things are in the house that I just had but can't seem to find. And he always knows. Luke has the opposite underwear problem - he won't wear any.

Maria said...

Happy New Year's to you too Kellan. You know, I never know what the date is either. I ALWAYS have to ask the kids. It makes me feel pathetic, too, when my 1st grader knows it and I don't. Hey, at least they're learning something in school!

I may or may not have gaffawed out loud at the underwear thing! Too funny.

I totally rely on my 6 year old for things like the date. His memory is WAY better than mine. And no, it is not early onset dimentia.

At least I don't remember it being that.

Happy New Year to you and yours!

Jill said...

I bet my 7 yo son could win the underwear wearing record.

Queeny said...

That's a stunt my hubs pulls all the time. By the way, I'm sticking around. Had a change of heart. Letting go is harder than I thought it would be.

Sniz said...

First of all, my 9 year-old daughter told me quite seriously yesterday that she had to put her favorite jeans in the wash because "it stunk so bad right there." And she pointed at her bottom. Can I just say, eww, gross? But I love that she's so innocent, she doesn't even hesitate to tell me stuff like that.

Second, I can NEVER remember the date either, so my sister's bought me a watch with the little window that has the date. It's the only way I can keep track. I must look at it several times a day!

Happy New Year, sweet Kellan! You're such a treat.
