Are Your Legs Broken?

I am in my bedroom making my bed.

The phone rings.

"Hello," I say, as I throw the bed pillows onto the floor, grab hold of the comforter and fold it down across the bed.

"Mom," the voice says, "It's Chloe." (uh ... I know)

"Yes," I say, as I continue to tug and pull at the sheets.

"Can you help us sew those things on the shirt for T?"

I am holding the phone against my ear with my shoulder, huffing a bit now as I am struggling to throw all the decorative pillows from the floor back up on the bed and I say, "I guess I could do that."

"Okay, good," Chloe says and then yells my answer loudly to her nearby sister.

I smooth the top of my comforter with my free hand and then sit on the edge of my nicely made-up bed and say into the phone, "Where are you at, Chloe?"

And she laughs and says, "Downstairs."

On the upside ... That's exactly what I thought.

Sounds like something from my parent's house :-)
I tagged you for a parenting meme that I'd love your opinion on. Please participate if you feel so inclined :-)

That's funny. At least she didn't yell through the house ;p

Jen said...

Well, you couldn't expect her to get up and come find you, could you? That would be crazy.
Happy New Year! I left something for you on my blog.

LOL, Ok I have to confess I have called (from my cell to the house phone) upstairs to my husband before. I just didn't want to yell. AND I was busy. Really busy. I mean I was probably doing something like folding laundry or cooking dinner. See. Really busy. :)

Very funny.... And, yeah, I used to do the same thing as a teenager. And, yeah, I think I've called my husband from the basement to upstairs too.....

MamaGeek said...

What Jennwa said, gotta love the teenage years! But hey - she didn't shout! Happiest of New Year wishes Kellan! And I still love your blog design...

Janet said...

On the bright side (or Upside!): at least cell phones put an end to that shouting up the stairs thing that we used to do, which would drive my father mental as he shook his head and muttered, "Well, *I* could have done that myself."

Melissa said...

LOL! I love your daughters comment. You sound so very much like a mom with the "are your legs broken?"

And Chloe is wrong, that's a great picture.

forgetfulone said...

Sounds like our house. "Can you call K and tell her to come down to dinner?" (K is upstairs!) Can't we just go to the stairs and shout, "dinner!" No, that would be too easy.

Bren said...

LOL My husband does that to me all the time. I guess it beats him yelling up the stairs and waking everyone up like he used to do.

Angela said...

"Back in the day" before cell phones, we used to do that weird dial some three digit number (I can't remember what it was) and then our phone number and hang up. Then our phone would ring, and we'd wait until it got answered across the house and pick up quickly and proceed to talk to whoever we needed to tell something to. Yes the laziness extended even there. And our house wasn't huge. Glad your kids are so normal!

ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?! Girl, that is too funny.

Maybe she gave up yelling as her new year's resolution?

Thank you, Kellen, for this post--HAHAHA! Except now I'm laughing so hard I'm practically in tears! All I can say is, whatever works...and it appears it does. And I just loved that Chloe left you a comment...and I also think the picture is cute. Your house sounds like a fun place to be!

Beth said...

Ha! I love it! I'll have to try that next time my husband is upstairs. It's actually brillant because he can't hear me when I yell anyway...or at least he pretends not to hear me. This way he's go no excuse!

Tot's Mom said...

Haha! No need to yell. That's what phones are for, I guess. :)

Mary said...

Ha! That's pretty funny!
I use to do that to my Mom before I moved out and got married! he he he

Cell phones would have been nice growing up! My family all yelled throughout the house, they still haven't broken the habit. Happy sewing!

That is so funny! It is better than screaming for you up the stairs, which is what we used to do to my mom.

Maria said...

Hey, she's right! At least she's getting good use out of her cell phone!

BTW, I tagged you!

EC said...

LOL - If my son ever did that I would take his cell phone away in a second, lol, but its funny that your daughter does that ;)

By the way, even at 34 when I call my mom I always say - Hi Mom, it's Erin... she still gets a kick out of it. So don't think that's going to change anytime soon with your daughter ;)

My brother does this to my mom all the time. Hilarious, except when my kids start doing it.

Reminds me of my youngest calling from her bedroom to her brother in his bedroom asking him if he would come and turn off her light because she was in bed and didn't want to get up.

Ya gotta love'em!

Kellan-I had a conversation not long ago with my husband about how I couldn't go to the store because my cell phone wasn't charged and there was no way I could drive ALL the way to the store and back without it. I laughed at myself. What did we all do BEFORE cell phones?? :) Have a great day.

I do that all the time with my husband...if I'm upstairs and he's downstairs I'll just grab my cell to ask him a question or have him bring something up.
It was GREAT during my pregnancies!

Don't you just love technology? :) Sounds like something my boys would do if we had a two story house, fortunately, (or maybe unfortunately) we have a ranch so they just SCREAM! BTW, I loved Chloe's comment, and if you're reading this Chloe, the picture is cute!

Family Adventure said...

My boy does the *same thing*. And now my youngest - who got a cell for Xmas because he is a spoiled little thing - is doing it also. I'm thinking it might be getting old soon... :)

I so love your sharing of teenager parenting, just terrific!
My husband does the same thing with the phone though. ugh.

linds said...

Chloe is smart. And she reminds me of my husband. His legs must be broken as well. He can be 5 feet from something and he will still ask me to get it for him!

Karen said...

My husband does that! I'll be downstairs working and he'll call from upstairs and ask me to bring him something.

Joanna said...

Oy Vey!! But it is funny! I like her comment - how are you suppose to vent to the world if you get busted?

Angela said...

I did that with my mom too when I was a teen

Kami said...

Oh dear! I ask my kids that all the time and they don't have cell phones yet.

I look forward to this!

:-)

Susan said...

I must confess my legs are broken quit often.

Leah said...

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, that was unexpected and funny. I guess not having teenagers with cell phones my mind wasn't going in that direction on it's own. Thanks for the laugh!!

My mom told me that my youngest brother (14) and a friend of his were caught texting this weekend...while in the same room only a foot apart. She & I both don't understand that. On the other hand, Jim wants to get a cordless phone system with an intercom feature so that if he's on the second floor and I'm downstairs somewhere, he can call me instead of yelling (or getting up...lol)

Heather said...

I hope you have a good free calling plan!

Eileen said...

Kellan,
This is so funny. So typical teenagers. I love it!! They are precious.
XOXO

Damama T said...

At least you have a downstairs. My daughter will call from her bedroom to my office... NEXT DOOR! Not 10 feet away!

But then it does come in handy, too... the best example of that is the day she called from the bathroom to tell me she needed more toilet paper because she'd taken the last two rolls into her bedroom. I do not want to know why she took two rolls of tp into her room... some thing are just better left unquestioned. LOL!!

Peace, Blessings and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

LOL, I call my husband when he's down stairs and I have a question...

joan said...

Too funny and I like her comment above. I've called my hubby on his cell phone from upstairs sometimes because he'll hear his cell and answer and when I yell to him in the house it seems he has selective hearing, if you know what I mean. LOL

http://multipleblessings.wordpress.com said...

OMGoodness! My hubby does the same thing! *rofl* ... The other day he sent me a text message from the bedroom, asking me when dinner was! *rolls eyes*

I love that your daughter commented on this one, lol!

That's such a sign of the times, though. We were visiting my in-laws, and all of them were sitting around their dining room table with their laptops like it was their own personal internet cafe. My brother-in-law joked that he now IM's the kids to tell them to take out the trash and do their chores.

Amy said...

That is funny!
Sure beats yelling up the stairs. It's way more civilized, if you think about it.
Isn't technology grand.

Victoria said...

Shut. Up. That is hilarious!!! Oh, I needed that giggle this evening!!! Too funny!

JCK said...

Any excuse for a girl to talk on the phone! LOL

Sounds like something I'd do. Not make the bed, but call from downstairs!
