Got COKE?

My son.

He is a candy junkie!

He is a soda junkie!

If I had a dime for every time that child has asked me , "Mom, can I have a Coke?" I could fill a rather large polar bear bank! And ... for every time I have said, "NO!" to this question ... I could fill another rather large polar bear bank!

Recently, I have gotten on him about not only constantly asking for the sodas, but also I have told him over and over again how they are not good for him and I don't understand why he can't just drink milk, juice or water. I told him just a few days ago, "The human body needs at least 8 glasses of water a day."

He said, "Coke has water in it."

I told him that that obviously was not the same and went on my way.

A while later, my older daughters and I were sitting in the family room and we heard Little Billy in the kitchen. He suddenly announced, slamming his glass down hard on the counter next to the sink, "That's eight!" and then he ran upstairs."

Apparently, he stood at the faucet, poured himself 8 glasses of water and chugged them down, one after the other.

Courtney, Chloe and I laughed - that he only had to say these two words and we knew exactly what he was talking about, yet he didn't realize we heard him. It was funny!

On the upside ... I don't know what possessed him to guzzle those 8 glasses of water - whether he just took me serious about the human body thing ... or he figured if he drank them and then asked me for a soda, I might just then say yes. He's pretty smart ... I'd bet on the latter.

Kellan my 14yrs old is soda junkie too big time ... he would do what Billy did LOL got to love their ingenuity.Very smart cookie that boy.

MamaGeek said...

Yep. I'd bet on the latter too. Got to at least give him an A for effort, right?

My husband chugs water when he thinks he hasn't had enough for the day. I think it is hilarious. He will just stand and the sink and drink glass after glass.
Billy sounds like he could be a lawyer in the making. He was totally setting you up.

The things I have to look forward to... sigh...

Andrea said...

Oh...can you imagine his poor, bloated stomach after guzzling 8 glasses of water, one right after the other?

Summer said...

I was definitely thinking the latter before I even read it. :)

Dad said...

Has he floated yet? ?

Melissa said...

Mmmm, Coke!! I'm voting for the latter, too. My 5 year old keeps asking for soda, we tell her it tastes yuck and she wouldn't like it. So far it's working...wonder how long that will last...

Yep, I'd bet on the latter. He probably ran upstairs really fast- to make it to the little boys room.

Wendy said...

That is funny! I should take your advice and drink my 8 glasses. Unfortunately I am addicted to Diet Coke. Admitting it is the first step!

Bren said...

Yep, I'm betting on the latter!

And how in the world did he chug 8 glasses in a row? No way could I do that!

Susan said...

I am sure he drank those eight glasses so he could say I already drank my water for the day.

I don't know how he did it in one sitting.

jen said...

i have nothing to offer but commiseration since i, too am a huge coke fan.

What a funny kid. So did he get the Coke after all that water?

justabeachkat said...

Too funny! My son (who is now 33) was nicknamed "The Coca Cola Kid" when he was younger for the very same reason! He now has three children and none of them get to drink coke. Sprite sometimes since it's decaf.

Hugs!
Kat

He probably doesn't want the pop for a while! Better set up a sleeping bag in the bathroom for him!

Dawn said...

I'm wondering if he still wanted Coke after all that water. What a funny kid.

onthegomom said...

Way tooooo funny! I am going with the latter choice, as well. This totally sounds like something my 14 y.o. son would do.

bermudabluez said...

Definitely the latter! And he probably spent a considerable amount of time in the little boys room!

Family Adventure said...

...and he was running to the washroom?? How quickly thereafter did you get the inevitable question?

Oh, that is TOO funny! I can just imagine him standing there, chugging his water, with his young male mind going over and over, "she wants 8 glasses of water? I'll give her 8 glasses of water! I can do it..." I wonder if maybe, to him, it was a challenge! Next time he asks for a Coke, try telling him you bet he can't go for a week without one. Again--young male mind + challenge = yes, I can go a week without a Coke. After that week is up? Well, let me think on it! HAHAHA! I, too, hope he stayed close to the bathroom...

What a cutie!

My son would do exactly the same thing too..

cheers kim

This sounds so much like my son!

thirtysomething said...

HAHAHAHA! Yep, you are probably right..he was going to just get the water drinking out of the way, then you had to say yes to the soda.
This is SO like my oldest son.

Kids get the funniest ideas in their heads. They are always trying to work the system I love it, it always, makes for a cute stories.

Nicki said...

That is to funny!

Jen said...

Was he up all night peeing? I tried drinking 8 glasses of water for awhile, but I decided the loss of sleep wasn't worth it.

Lisa said...

8 glasses of water all at once? My tummy hurts just thinking about it, and my bladder... Well... You don't want to know. LOL

Rosie read an article about what pop can do to your teeth. She's terrified of getting a cavity, so that's all it took. ;o)

Jodi said...

that's too funny. sounds like something my kids would do.

thanks for stopping by!

i hate to say this but seeing as my oldest is 10 i do believe he chugged those 8 glasses so that now you have no case and he can have that coke now. that is one smart kid. i hate when my kids call me out on my argument!! ha ha

Kathryn said...

HAHAHA! Smart boy! I bet he figured after 8 glasses of water he could get that soda. Too funny.

One Scrappy Gal said...

LOL!!

So... did you let him have a coke? :)

Melanie said...

That's a lot of water to drink all at once. I'm betting he's pretty smart too and figured you'd surely let him have his soda if he'd finished his water quota for the day.

OHmommy said...

Smart little fella! Your family really does keep you on your toes, heh?

kimmy said...

My son would have chugged the eight glasses of water so that he could drink soda the rest of the day! Funny story!

Joanna said...

Mmm, Coke! He drank all 8 at once?? That makes ME want to go to the bathroom! I gotta ask - did he come out and ask for a coke?

LunaNik said...

lol that's really adorable! i bet he spent alot of time in the bathroom after chugging 8 glasses of water

Wonderful World of Weiners said...

Diet Coke DOES have water in it - it's right there listed on the label. SO LEAVE HIM ALONE!!!

(I have a DC addiction, can you tell?) :-)

Hallie

Kami said...

HA! I think it was the latter too but I am surprised he didn't come running to you right then to ask for a coke :-)

Karen MEG said...

Gotta give him an A+ for effort, that was hilarious. That's a whole lotta water your smartypants drank!
Did you tell him that the caffeine in Coke will make him go to the washroom more, thereby increasing his water requirements to 8 + LOL?

Lizzy in the Burbs said...

We have the same problem at our house with soda, it's gotten to the point where I've gone on strike sometimes and refused to buy it because my kids drink too much of the stuff. I only buy diet pop, and I've limited them to two a day. After they've had two, it's water, milk or juice for the rest of the day.

Poor Billy must have had a tummy ache after all that water! At least his "system" is all cleansed now! :)

Shellie said...

Ha!I'd bet on the latter too!

Cheeky said...

My kids are junkies too (ok me too) so to counteract it - I just don't buy it (well not regularly - for treats I will)

Mighty Morphin' Mama said...

What a cutie! I would bet on the latter too:)

~cari~ said...

What a funny boy! He thinks along the same line as my youngest son. Boys are fun aren't they?

Thanks for visiting my blog! It was fun getting a comment from someone new!

Patti said...

Yep i'd bet on the latter also. I would have tried it at his age! LOL

The Stevens Family said...

My bladder would have burst. Then again he hasn't had two kids so his bladder should be a little stronger. Did you give him the coke?

Holly said...

He's a smart boy. Mine won't drink anything but water. I'd like to get some milk and juice into them, but no way.

girlymom said...

Did he run upstairs to hit the bathroom? I don't think I would make it. Heck I don't think I could guzzle 8 glasses! Kuddos to him on that. I am sooo guilty of sitting here with a Diet Coke right now- it's diet right?! Does that make it any better? Oh yeah- and there's water in it!! :p
You've got a smartie pants there!

Leah said...

That was hilarious! And my vote is on the latter as well. My 3.5 year old has a brain that works just that way... Just last night, I told him we couldn't have candy after dinner because candy is a treat, and treats are for sometimes. I went on to add that our bodies need lots healthy food to grow big and strong. He promptly asked for a second helping of broccoli, devoured it, then sweetly as you please, asked for just ONE piece of candy.

Heather said...

I imagine he was running upstairs to the bathroom? My 4 year old is a diet coke junkie. How does he know what diet coke tastes like at 4? Ask my mother.

Andrea said...

haha...yep...you're probably right that he'll be asking you for a Coke later on - especially since he drank those 8 cups of water now! haha...oh, and I love his logic that Coke has water in it!! ha! :)

the dragonfly said...

Too too too funny!

Did you let him have a Coke later? ;)

HRH said...

Throw some peanuts into the coke, that might slow it down or stop it--haha! If that doesn't work...you could try the straw trick.

tommie said...

that is funny...sounds like 8 year old logic to me! Did you let him have one?

suchsimplepleasures said...

oh...i'm soooooo betting on him asking you for another cola...any second now!!!
have an awesome weekend!

Victoria said...

So - did he indeed as for a Coke later? Surely that was his plan.

Hmm. Suddenly *I* want a coke.

Stacie said...

oh my goodness...that is too cute!

Nicki said...

That's funny. Yeah, I bet he'll be asking for that Coke.

JCK said...

Definitely a smart little guy. I'm thinking he's asking for a coke right about...now.

Pam said...

My husband is a soda junkie too! I get on him about not drinking enough water -- finally I found a statement about water helping your metabolism to convince him. Doubt that will help Billy!

I'm dying to know if he asked for the coke later?? That was my first though- he drank 8 glasses so he could have coke!

katy said...

I am a pepsi junkie and I very seldom drink water. It is so bad for your waistline...or what used to be my waistline.
Thanks for the good wishes for DD..we are home and toughing it out here...but it should get better soon.

angie said...

I don't know him, but based on my kids, I'd guess the later, too.

Karen said...

I'll bet he really wasn't thirsty for a coke anymore after all that. Good plan, Mom!

He'll be ready for the military at least. My hubbs said they had to drink 8 glasses of water before they were allowed to eat breakfast during basic training.

Irene said...

Wow, crazy kids! But they do create great blogging subjects!

So, did all that water make him sick? I can't imagine being able to drink all that, without being quite sick afterwards. I mean, your stomach can only hold so much, right?

Sharon said...

They do say kids are getting smarter everyday!

All I know is that 8 glasses at one time would make me oh so sick.
And yes, it is also a reminder of what I should be doing more of in this new year. UGH!
Why is it so hard to drink water?

Amy said...

my matt is a junk-food junkie too!!! he loves anything sweet. love your son's logic. too cute!!!

Valarie said...

wow...chugging 8 glasses of water in one sitting....he's lucky he isn't a 28 year old mother of 4 or he would have peed his pants about an hour later....

La La said...

I'm betting that he didn't want any coke after that!!! LOL!

wheelsonthebus said...

That is fantastic. I bet he spent some time in the bathroom that afternoon.

Rachel said...

Oh you're in trouble with that one :-) LOL!
Absolutely adorable!

Mo said...

I'd bet on the latter too. He is very clever! What I explain to the girls about soda being not as good for you is that soda has caffeine. Caffeine is a diuretic (it dehydrates your body). So you don't end up getting any real liquid intake when you drink soda. I know this because I used to drink up to a 12 pack of diet soda a day (no other liquids), and was shocked when the doctor told me I was severely dehydrated.
