I Don't Know No Hip-Hop

Everyday - there is something to do.

On this day, I had spent several hours at the grocery store, attended to my multitude of morning household duties, taken the dog to the groomer and picked her up, gone by the post office and was on my way home from taking my daughter, Chloe, to her orthodontist appointment.

I was tired.

I call home.

I need to forward instructions to my son - TO DO HIS HOMEWORK - before I get home - OR ELSE!

I think I have called the wrong house because the child on the other end of the phone says, "YO!" like a hip-hop chick.

I say, "Who is this?"

She then says, "YO, Mama, I be Alexis," and she giggles.

I say, "What are you doing?" trying to keep from giggling myself.

She says, "We be playing in my room. We be coloring."

I say, "Where is Granna?" And she hangs up the phone.

On the upside ... I called back. She answered again and I said, "YO, HOME-GIRL! GO GET YOUR GRANDMOTHER!" and she did.

Ha! I just thought of another "on the upside"...at least it was your young daughter talking like a home-girl and NOT her Granna!!!

There seems to be a lot of laughing going on at your house. Perhaps you all should star in a reality show!

So funny.

Now if you were her grandmother, you would NOT have known to say 'Yo Homegirl'...see, you're NOT old enough to be her grandmother!! :)

Melissa said...

I can just hear you saying "Yo, Home-Girl" in your best Texas accent!! LOL!

Great storry, Kellan. In response to me asking my 3yr old if she wanted mac and cheese for lunch, she said "Fo Shizzle" I have NO idea where she heard it, but it sure made me laugh.

Cathy said...

Now the question is, did her grandmother respond in kind?!

Too funny! I wonder who she'd picked that up from.

Can I just say I am so happy to hear that I am not the only one with a 10 yr old who has to be nagged to do his homework...OR ELSE!

Funny, YO.

See, further proof that you aren't her grandmother.

Grandmothers just aren't that quick!

kim-d said...

Oh Kellan, I am so sorry! Which just goes to show that I am WAY old enough to be your little homey's grandmother...because I would have cried. I would have ABSOLUTELY cried at hearing "we be..." anything out of that sweet little girl's mouth (or mouf????). I hope daily that the whole hip hop/rap/whatever it is thing just goes away, but I guess I can stop wasting my time if it's down to the 6 yos now. Looks like I'm gonna need to get with the times, huh? Just like the COOL GRANDMAs. HAHA!

You should be flattered that she thinks you are young enough and hip enough to "get" what she's saying!!

Alexis must have heard some retro hip hop. My kids listen to it all the time, and I can say for certain it's come a long way since "Yo!"

Ah... The joys of learning a new foreign language! LOL

Yep, I am sure by the time Dylan is a teenager I will have no idea what he is talking about! I will be sitting at my computer, googling a word he said to me, hours later, and then I'll scream "HEY!", and run into his room to tell him he is grounded!

Amanda said...

HAHA! A 6 yr old hip hopper. Too cute!

lol. Yes, sometimes us moms need a sense of humor to keep from losing our minds. I just realized the concept you have going on your blog, the whole On The Upside footnote(I know it takes me a while, in my defense I usually do my blogging before I am fully caffinated.) thing- and I love it. This a unique concept and extremely clever. Not too mention, you crack me up.

HI KELLAN! I usually just kind of lurk around here because you have so many others leaving such great stuff! They say everything I'm thinking so I figure no need to clutter up your comments with my repetition. BUT TODAY I HAVE A SURPRISE FOR YOU!

I was recently given an award. The TRUE BLUE AWARD and in keeping with the spirit of the giver, I passed it along to two others. One of those is Margie, an Anonymous commenter who not only frequents my world, but loves yours, tool.

Now, in keeping with the spirit in which I gave it to her, she's asked me to do her the favor of passing it on to you for her since she doesn't have her own blog. (Yes, I'm trying to get her to start one because she'd keep us all cracking up, but as yet she's got too much else on her plate to add blogging.)

ANYWAY... It's kind of nontraditional, but YOU HAVE AN AWARD... And you can go grab it off of my blog at.

Keep cracking us all up, girl. I don't know how you keep coming up with stuff, but PLEASE DON'T STOP!

xoxo and TTFN!

New Word from my 14 y.o.'s vocabulary: "aight" Translation into English: "alright".

An easy way to drive your mother crazy, saying aight 15 times in a 3 second conversation!

Yo, Peace out!
