Hon ... It's FEBRUARY!

All over the world right now - IT IS SNOWING!!

In some areas of the United States - there have been record snowfalls this year.

We have not had even one snowflake here at my house - not even one.

It is highly likely that we will go through this entire winter and not see one flake of snow.

But ...

It is still nippy outside.

Most days it is downright COLD.

On Monday, February 18th - President's Day - it was in the 60's - very sunny and yet 60 degrees is still chilly in my book. I was so chilled that I wore a long pair of pants with a long sleeved shirt to match. When I was in my house, I kept a blanket thrown across my lap to keep the chill away.

At about 1:00 in the afternoon, I went to get in my car to go pick up my son from his friends' house.

Alexis - who was in the front yard playing with my niece - came running up to my car window - running in her bare feet, by the way - running towards me in her short sleeved shirt and cropped to the knees capri pants - running with the breeze blowing through her loose hair. She stands on the driveway ... looks up at me with those dark brown eyes and she says ...

"Can we go swimming today?"

I am in my van, with my sweater buttoned to my chin and the heat cranked up on high to take the chill off in my car and I say, "Wwhaat?" (*blink - blink*)

More excited now, honestly believing this is a reasonable and possible request, she asks again, "Please ... can we go swimming today?"

I shake my head in astonishment, "Alexis - it is FEBRUARY!"

She, with the Texas sun shining on her face and with no clue that FEBRUARY means that it is still WINTER, says, "So, can we? I'm so hot and look - the sun's out?" she points up to the Texas sky.

I say, "Uh - No."

"Maybe when you get back," she tries to reason with me.

I say, "I don't think so," putting exaggerated emphasis on all the syllables in these words.

"Maybe when it's Spring?" she has such a hopeful look on her face.

"Yes," I say - and drive away; leaving her and my niece playing barefooted on the driveway... on a sunny ... February day.

On the upside ... Lucky for me she doesn't really know when SPRING is and ... the way our weather goes here in Texas - it will either definitely be warm enough for her to go swimming when Spring actually arrives - or ... we could have an ICE STORM or the first freak snow of the decade. I will just cross that bridge when Sring gets here. For now ... SHE IS NOT GOING SWIMMING ON THIS PRESIDENTS' DAY - I don't care how sunny it is outside - Sorry Hon.

Now ... run get mommy a blanket.

That sounds like recess at school. The kids look at me, all honest and say "can we take our coats off?" I look at them blankly wondering if they can seriously be asking me this question. I then realize they do want a response and say 'no'. Half the class walks away and the other half- 'but we are H-O-T'. Me- again blankly staring and wondering if they actually think I would ever let them take their coat off on this cold day- finally answers saying- It is February, don't ask me that question again until April.

You have a beautiful pool! I'm coming for a Spring swim!

Andrea said...

why is it that kids don't feel temperatures like us adults?

the pool looks so inviting though...can i come over in SPRING and go for a dip??

Marie said...

The pool sure does look inviting!

Our pool is closed up tight (and I'm sure it's frozen). We get to swim June through September here in the midwest. Sweetie...you want cold? It's 3 degrees here right now...and snowing!

Can I visit you in Texas?

Melanie said...

I hope you're going to be hosting a bloggy pool party this summer.

Can I just say- 60 degrees sounds wonderful to me!

MamaGeek said...

I wonder what you consider cold. Can I send you a box of snow? I'd be glad to. :)

That is BEAUTIFUL.

Angela said...

My husband just called and asked me to go out on the balcony to see if it is snowing. NO WAY it is cold.
I wouldn't mind some 60 degree weather here though.
It was lovely here this past monday
I did not even need a coat.
Smiles!

Dawn said...

You do have a beautiful pool. I would consider 60 pretty warm right now :) My son waded into a river up to his knees today and there's still snow where we were, he didn't even seem to notice, and yes...I pulled him out right away.

Is this before the deet fell in?

HRH said...

It must be much warmer down there. it is freezing here way up north in dallas. brrrr. I can't take more than 2 days in a row this cold...my TX blood has thinned. Your pool looks inviting--I can't blame her!

Brittany said...

60 degrees sounds WONDERFUL right now!! It's snowing...a lot here... and I'm not sure I like it. I am so sick of snow and cold... and slippery driveway! I want to run barefoot, like Alexis!! haha.

Melissa said...

60, chilly, really? It was -5 here the other day...now that's chilly!! :)

Your pool is beautiful and makes me want to take a swim!

dlyn said...

Spring won't reach these parts for a looooong time yet! :D

Jenn @ Juggling Life said...

People don't realize that when you live in a warm climate your house often is that well insulated. Here in San Diego, in the winter, I spend all my time in the house wrapped in a blanket!

JenKneeBee said...

Sixty degrees is about eighty degrees warmer than it's been here the last few days! Although, I agree with you that it still might not be swimming weather yet :)

jamie said...

Kellan--the windchill here on presidents day was something like negative 28. Honestly! I would so put on a bikini for mid 60s! :)

jennifer h said...

60 degrees...I'm with you--brrr. My blood is thin now that I've lived in AZ for 4 years.

Pretty pool and backyard, though.

Yvette said...

No snow flakes here either - but definitely too cold for the pool!!

Too cold for short sleeves and bare feet too.

I can't wait for Spring!! I hate cold weather and these flip-flop temps are keeping my household sick :(

Take care!

Carl & Kathy Heppner said...

Well that's sure funny! We're from Winnipeg Canada and in February it can be -25 and we survive. But in Fresno, it's 50 right now. If I still had my "Canadian blood", I'd be out in capris, but as it turns out I have two shirts on a wool socks because I'm freezing too! Hope spring comes soon for you.

Aw, Kellan You just burst a little (my granddaughters) girls dream

Shan said...

I am sitting here waiting for the snow to start again. Nobody's asking to go swimming around here.

bermudabluez said...

It'll probably be about five more months before we'll be doing any swimming...we are expecting six more inches of snow tonight. A town north of here got FORTY-EIGHT inches the other day!!! But, you're right...I think it's all what you get used to!

Hillary said...

I've gone swimming in February in AZ! I'm all for February swimming in warmer climates (but don't worry--I won't tell your daughter!).

Amy said...

HAHA! Kellan, as a native Texan I am right there with you! It has been cold, I don't care what those north of the Mason-Dixon line say. Sorry, I'm a wimp! Get me a blanket too!

sting said...

oh, that looks like a beautiful day to go for a dip :-) btw, you are welcome over here anytime of the year... it's either hot or hotter or wet... :-)

Joanna said...

Beautiful picture!! Tell your daughter to enjoy it as there are lots of people freezing right now.

Amanda said...

I'm with your daughter! I want to go swimming too...its really hot where we are! :) You're most welcome to come a long....no need for that blanket.

Barrie said...

The photo does look inviting... ;)

You probably don't have to ever close down your pool do ya? Well except for random deer, but I'm not counting that. I grew up with a pool and we were so excited to be the first person in that as soon as it was filled we were in...the water was maybe 50 degrees! Looking back I don't know how we did that, Lake MIchigan will be up to 70 degrees by August and I am still too wimpy! And yes I say UP to 70 in August! Brrr....

Have a great weekend, Kellan...see ya Sunday night!

I LOVE IT!!!!!!!! Alexis is a sweet lil child after my own heart. Barefooted and in capri's. She can come stay at my house anytime. I will spoil her senseless and do tons of lil girl scrapbook pages (coz I never get to do lil girl pages) and we will go swimming!!!!!
Have a great Friday and thanks so much for the laugh first thing this morning.
BTW: your back yard is gorgeous.

Just the other day Emma was asking if she could go swimming in her pool, and I had to remind her it is freezing cold outside.

So she told me she could wear her jacket. That would keep her warm.

Jen said...

In the 60's - " I was so chilled that I wore a long pair of pants with a long sleeved shirt to match". Wah! (Cue the violins). Come to Pittsburgh and you will know what COLD feels like, sista!

Happy Days said...

I think right about now I could go barefoot and put capris on for 60s. I can't wait for spring. It is snowing right now and I have had enough. Can we come over and take a swim? Have a great weekend!

It's a snow day today!

No school!

No medical appts!

Nothing!!

I miss the sun!

That is so funny!!! I feel your "warmth" too, here in NC we haven't had much of a winter! Although today, it is in the 40's so you know they'll be breaking out the salt for the streets!! =)

Lisa said...

I can't imagine being barefoot outside during a KY winter. Usually we have snow. This year it's been rain. Lots of it...

TheCynicalOptimist said...

When I read this post I tried to off myself with my favorite Coach scarf but my hands were too numb from the cold and it ended up just giving me a lot of extra static cling so that my hair stuck straight out.

Oh... what I wouldn't do for sunshine and 60's!!!

Tammy said...

I'm so jealous. We are still shoveling snow!!!!!!!!!!!

Courtney said...

Thanks for this considering I woke up to about 3 inches of snow this morning. I'm coming to your gorgeous property. Sorry if you're not inviting me, oh and I won't be bringing kids or hubby so don't worry about that.

Steph said...

Kellan,

Cute story. It must be something about southern kids not knowing the seasons. My cousins and I all grew up in the south (cousins in Dallas, TX and me and my sister in New Orleans, LA) and we use to always want to go swimming in the winter. We were lucky though, we had a membership to the YMCA which had a heater indoor pool so we got to go from time to time. You have got to love southern winters.

Great looking pool. Very inviting.
Here in Washington Spring is slowly
arriving. Seems so light this morning so the days are getting longer. We reached 58 degrees this last weekend and thought it was spring. We mowed and worked in the yard. We can't have a pool. It rains all summer : (

For some reason, the words SPOILED ROTTON keep popping into my mind. That would be YOU and your WHOLE SIXTY DEGREE TOWN!!!!! I may have to stop lovin' ya for that one. We haven't seen above low 20s in a week. Every day we get a tad more snow. I longingly look at your photo with GREEN THINGS IN IT! HOLY COW! GREEN STILL EXISTS?!?!?
My boys asked me in November one day when it was about 45 degrees to play in the Sprinkler. Uh. No.
KEEP BELIEVING

Us Canadians would find that quite warm and would dive right in ;-)

It's all in your perspective.

That pool looks like heaven.

The Asians like us never get that cold. I was in North Thailand and I think the coldest was 16 C. Its about 30C here in Bangkok during afternoon. Early mornings and evenings are nice and cool.

Hubby grew up in Texas and sometimes teases me that he'd like to move us there (we're in Ohio so its no short trip!) and now I'm thinking maybe it would be okay...

Hey Kellan, great back yard...I LOVE living here, the weather is awesome...yesterday I drove around with my top down...let me clarify that...the top on my CAR was down!

Hetha said...

You'd hate it here in Ohio! We have 6 inches of snow on the ground with a layer of freezing rain at the base and coating the top. It's glorious!

Our friend has a sis visiting from Arizona and he warned her that our weather would be weird and she goes "it's okay, I'll bring a pair of pants". LOL! She's gonna flip out.

Kathryn said...

You are so sassy. I am so jealous! I would be in shorts and a tee shirt if it were 60 here. That picture is such a tease. But lovely. :)

I always get so excited to come visit you blog, I am just sure that you have written something that will 1- make me tear up or 2- make me giggle and smile from ear to ear.

Today was no different, I am smiling and that makes me happy cause all I can think about right now is that I haven't been able to eat since Wednesday. I hate having the Flu.

Maria said...

Well she may not be going swimming...But I am. I'll be right over! That pool looks wonderful, and compared to our 20', I'll take 60 and sunny anyday!

It is all so relative! We had whopping 43 degrees here and there were people running around in tank tops and short shorts! I kid you not.

Crazy Northeners!

I tagged you for a meme, hope you don't mind! :)

We had a foot of snow the other day. 60 degrees outside, we would have been swimming, that seems very warm to us.
We get in the hottub on the deck outside with the snow falling on us. When you live in the North you have to take the good with the bad.

gina parker said...

As I sat here reading your post, I glanced out the window at the snow piling up outside (four inches and counting!) and had to agree with your daughter- heck if it was sixty out up here- we'd be SWIMMING! ;) When does Spring start actually???????

Patti said...

I wanted to see some snow so much this winter but it was not to be (well we got a smattering right after New Years but... )

My little one has NO concept of cold weather either!

Pennies In My Pocket said...

Kids always amaze me. It could be 20 degrees outside and they are still totally fine with going out in a tank top to play in the yard. I don't get it...don't they get COLD? lol Just don't take her to Florida right now...she'd get SO confused about weather! lol

♥ Ummmm 60 degree weather sounds great about now. Yesterday it was 45-50 and I broke out the capris! :)

Leah said...

it's amazing how warm-blooded little kids are! My kids start stripping off coats and hats at the first hint of sun outside. And while I'm shivering in long pants and a fleece pull-over, they're complaining about how hot they are... I don't get it!

ValleyGirl said...

Well, I can't really say I feel sorry for you and your low temperatures. Dang, this time of year around here, 60 would be downright tropical!! (I had to check my conversion though, and it would be a little cool for a swim, even for us northerners!!)

This Southern Belle said...

Brr, 60 is cold in my book also! Texas proud. :)

My son asks to go swimming year round, and honestly, I don't think he'd care if it was 10 below! So funny how things change!

Eileen said...

Kellan,
I don't think you would do well here in Upstate New York. The temp. is currently 15 degrees and the snow keeps falling. You would need a lot of blankets up here. If it was 60 degrees, I would think it was summer!!

I do love the idea of swimming in Feb.! Your pool looks so beautiful, makes you want to just jump right in. When I was a kid, I loved to swim so much, it would have been torture to have such an amazing pool in the back yard and not be able to jump in!!

Hope she can hold out until spring!

Have a great weekend!

XOXO

Damm you Kellan.... it is so flipping cold in Ohio. Do you have a spare room?

Oh... oh, the envy I have.

Up here in Toronto the snow/ice/snow/ice/rain/snow/ice has been insane.

I'm pretty well done for this year ThankYouVeryMuch.

Love the pool/gazebo. Very pretty backyard!

Hi, Kellan!

I was talking to my sister the other day, she's in Dallas and she was telling me how terribly cold it is there. So, I asked her, how cold is it? She said it was 55 degrees. For her, that is cold. She is comfortable somewhere around 93, 94 degrees. That particular day, it was 6 degrees here is Chicago. She didn't get a whole lot of sympathy from me! :)

I'm sure little Alexis won't have to wait too terribly long before it's pool season! Your backyard and pool look beautiful!

I HATE being cold!

Maybe it's because I grew up in Texas. Maybe I'm just a wuss.

Whatever the reason, I am soooooo ready for spring.

My daughter also keeps asking when we can go swimming again. "Spring takes too long," she says.

My thoughts exactly.

Holly said...

Oh Kellan! LOL! Too funny. 60 degrees is perfect for swimming! It hit 43 here last week and my son refused to wear his coat because, "It's so hot outside Mom! I don't need it!"
Of course it snowed again today...

Your Texas weather sounds like what Atlanta was like. Always unpredictable. I just love Alexis stories!

Oh Kellan, I am dreaming of 60 degree weather. We have almost 3 feet of snow here. This past Sunday it was 40 degrees and we were outside without coats and relishing in the WARM WEATHER! :-)

Well as you may know I spend last week in Texas and I loved it except for the one day when it rained but compared to upstate NY your weather was like a heat wave to me. The whole week I was in Texas the weather in Upstate NY was snow, ice, cold, and more snow. I was glad for the break!
Thanks for your Texas weather on loan for the week!
