SORRY!

Oh ... there are a lot of DREADED words that a mother hates to hear.

I'm not talking about horrific things - don't want to think about horrific things. I'm talking about those moments when a little one comes to you and says something that sends a bit of a chill up your spine.

Things like ...

"Mommy. There's something wrong with the toilet."

You know - DREADED words.

I've heard my share of DREADED words over the years and have compiled a mental list of the ones that rub me the most chilly.

I have tried to teach my children - over the years - those words that I am not fond of - those that make me a bit CRAZY. They still use all these words, but have gotten smart enough to know that they should say them really fast - like they are throwing them at me like a dart - and then run as fast as they can ... out of the room.

Say it - RUN!

Mostly ... my children have learnt this lesson well.

Alexis, however ..... is still young.

She has not caught on as quickly as I would like.

She is either a bit slow or ... trying to change the rules around my house.

I know this because ...

She came into my room the other night.

She stood by my bed.

She twisted her face.

She puckered her lower lip.

She batted long dark eyelashes over glossy puppy-dog eyes.

She said .............. "Will you play a game with me?"

And ... she DID NOT RUN!

Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay ........ first of all -

1. All 7 of these words are at the very top of my DREADED words list!

2. I did not get the "game" gene and I am not a game player.

3. All my children KNOW THIS!

I have played Barbies, I have played blocks, I have played puzzles, I have played Polly-Pockets, I have played doll house, I have played Little Pony's, I have played drawing and painting and coloring and stickering and sponging and gluing and glittering. I have played in the yard and in the pool and in the woods and in the sand and in their rooms and in the garage and on the driveway and ... I have played Play Dough. I have played frisbee, I have played jump-rope and bikes and skates and skooters. I have played in tents and forts and sand-boxes. I have played A LOT of stuff!

I do not play games!

SORRY!

On the upside ... I don't know exactly what happened ... she must have come to her senses or something, because she just turned and walked out of my room before I even had to tell her, "SORRY - I don't play games - go ask your Daddy." Maybe it was the you-know-very-well-that-I-don't-play-games-look I had on my face. I imagine that is what it was.

Dreaded, really? Did you have a horrible UNO-gone-wrong episode when you were a child? Scarred for life over excessive use of the "Draw Four." It's sad really...

:)

Laughing at this post! I am okay with board games, but I hate toddling behind kids at the playground. My rule is if you can't climb it yourself then you don't get to go up.

Karen said...

I love this! I used to like playing games, but playing with the older kids while trying to keep younger kids from wrecking cards and game pieces and dice just turned me against the whole thing.

utmomof5 said...

How funny are you!! I must say this is not on my dreaded word list but this one is "What's for dinner?"

I swear I hate this question even when I know the answer to it!! I always give my kids some smart alex answer, they don't laugh.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only mom out there that hates to play games...go read a book...

Maria said...

Really? You don't like games? I ONLY like playing games, Sorry, cards, even video games and sport games. I have a hard time playing the pretend games.

La La said...

I don't like to play games, either. I'm not competitive enough, and it always got too competitive for me to have any fun!

Cathy said...

I'm still laughing over the "something wrong with the toilet" part! Such a dreaded phrase indeed...

Lucille said...

I think I should have adopted that phrase but alas it is TOO LATE for me! The one I can't stand is MONOPOLY! Ugh - what a horrible LONG game! Even the kids Disney edition...it is just brutal! I do enjoy playing the ones I grew up with which oddly enough are all popular again!

Have a good night and thanks for checking in with me!

Send her to my house...I LOVE games! :) I'll save you!

games sometimes are boring also..

I SOOOOOO can relate to this post!!! I too played Barbies, Little Pony, blocks, legos, Polly Pockets...but NOT games. I'm NOT a game person either. Never have been. NEVER will be!!! And now. My daughter isn't either!

♥ I like playing "games" but playing games with kids drives me insane I just don't have the patience to sit there for 10 years while they decide what they're going to do! I'm finally beginning to enjoy playing games with my 7 year old but she can read now and think pretty quickly! :)

Dawn said...

In my house, it's Barbies that I just can't take. I tried not to even have them, but with grandparents... I find myself telling my daughter "I'm more of a reading books kind of Mommy" ;)

I agree that there is a game gene, some people have it, some people don't. I have it. I love games. My sister in law doesn't have it. I feel bad when we all get together to play games while she reads a book. Until the invention of the Wii. Now she plays with us.

Do you do meme's? I couldn't resist tagging you. I hope it interests you.

Leah said...

You and my husband must have gotten the same "no game playing" genes, somehow. Unless he can kick your butt by a mile he wants no part of playing games. And if it's anything that says "ages 3+", you may as well beat him over the head and kill him, because he acts like he's dying a horribly painful death when one or the other of the older two kids manages to talk him into playing. USUALLY he comes up with a "better" alternative to following through with a game request. Like, passing out popcicles, or candy, or something along those lines. ME? I LOVE playing games and it KILLS me a little bit each day my hubby doesn't love games the way I do. And play kids games? LOVE the time with them (because I've decided I've completely lost the knack for playing Barbies and My Little Ponies and Polly Pockets). Except Candyland. I've played WAY too much Candyland lately. Someone please come steal our copy of Candyland. I'll be your best friend!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Thanks for the laugh Kellan

I appreciate your honestly. Many moms would just cringe and bear it and say that they LOVE playing games. I must say that not everything my children want to do, I enjoy. And I guess that's just okay!

Eagles' Wings said...

My children often play games amongst themselves and once a while, Joel says, "Come and play games with us. You haven't played for ages!!!" Feeling guilty I will obliged. Its a once a while thing...

carrie said...

I am totally with you on the games . . . and I will do anything else --- ANYTHING but the board games, especially LIFE! That takes forever!

Family Adventure said...

Clever girl, your little Alexis. She came to her senses!

And I am very much with you on the whole game playing thing. Hate.It. I will play card if I MUST. But board games? No thank you...

Heidi :)

Tot's Mom said...

Ok, I learn something today. Don't stock up on too many games at home, especially those that require 2 people to play!

Beth said...

I'm with you! I don't play games either. In fact, the only games we have in the house are gifts from other people and I try to keep those hidden. Out of sight. Out of mind!

Toni said...

I HATE board games. I do. I thought this made me a bad mom but now I see there is a whole mom movement against the freaking things.

Whew. I feel better now; thanks Kellan!

Jacki said...

Hahha...it is funny to find out different things that parents hate to do with their kids. Mine is definitely the playground. It probably makes me a terrible parent, but I just hate running around a playground.

Board games are no problem, as toys. But I hate the playground.

Thanks for the kind words you left on my blog. :-)

Cheeky said...

I adore playing games but no one will ever play with me - cause I always win. Its not that I am super competitive or anything....I am good loser on the rare occasion that it happens.

Sniz said...

I'm not a game player either, until they get old enough to play REAL games like Scrabble or Clue.

Jen said...

Kellan, Kellan, Kellan. Tsk, tsk. Where did this aversion to games come from? You're just afraid you'll lose, aren't you? How do you know you hate all games, if you've never played them? I'm calling child services. ; )

What scares me more than words... is complete silence. Because you KNOW they are up to something! :)

Send her on to Arkansas. We have a game day at least once a month. With a house full of boys board games are much easier for me to do than some of the games they play on their own. Such as D-man and his friends newest game. Pinecone wars on the trampoline. Nope not having pinecones thrown at me while I jump on the trampoline. Then again,,, I am not jumping on the trampoline either.
Have a great day

This was cute! It really made me laugh.

We don't play board games around here either. Mostly because Candyland causes massive meltdowns if they lose!

Brittany said...

Geesh mom. ;) haha.

Jk... That's just like how I DO not Wrestle or play rough. Adam knows this... and he's only two. haha. I just can't justify rolling around on the ground with the possibility of someone getting hurt... and that somebody would probably be me!

Queeny said...

I'm not a game player either. The Princess asks me all the time to "play Barbie" and I hate "playing Barbie." I'd rather be Ken, then I can go golfing and not have to deal with the family.

OHmommy said...

LOL, I thought I was the only one! WTG mommy for putting your foot down, I will play everything and anything with my kids except for games!

Steph said...

Oh you would never make it in my house my daughter plays board games on the weekend all the time sometimes I play 10 games of chutes and ladders back to back!

girlymom said...

Kellan, you are too much! I am surprised that you did scootering, that's dangerous! I about break an ankle whenever I try! Ha.

Have a great game-free day!

Sheri said...

Finally, someone else that doesn't like them either. I thought I was the only one. lol

Jen said...

I also do not love games. My DH loves them, so I'm often directing the kids to go play with daddy, or with grandma, or with each other.

The A-MAZE-ing Labrynth is one that is tolerable though. It's really fun for the kids, and for some reason it doesn't bother me to play it.

Courtney said...

I love playing games, but with Callee it gets a little rough. Some people just aren't though!

Don Mills Diva said...

That is so funny - I laughed out loud at the "there's something wrong with the toilet" line!

Marie said...

Oh, so funny!

I cringe when Zach yells "let's play Deal or No Deal". I cannot play this game one more time unless money comes flying out of the tv at me.

Kami said...

HA! I laughed so hard at the toilet one.. I know it well! Shivers indeed.

I am the opposite. I love to play games but the bazillion other things you mentioned. Not so much.

I know, terrible mother I am. But I love them, does that count?

Angie said...

I wonder what terrible game playing experience you have in your past haunting you to such an aversion of games today. LOL!
I Love games. It is one of the few things I LOVE doing with my kids. I do not like to wrestle. I do not like light saber or swordfights. I do not like to do crafts. BUT I LOVE TO PLAY GAMES! LOVE IT! They know it. Mommy is always up for a board game or some book reading. ALWAYS.
KEEP BELIEVING

I've played my share of Polly Pockets, dress-up and dolls too! Sometimes it takes so much energy to be that creative!

The only games I like to play involve alcohol. I guess I better start working on that.

multipleblessings said...

I'll play games with the kids sometomes... SOME games... But not very often. We always say we should do a game night or something, for the kids, but we never do...

Holly said...

I so totally sympathize! I hate playing games and my husband was an only child who never got to play them so we have billions of board games here. I always get thrown the guilt trip for not playing but board games make my eyes cross!

Susan said...

I am so glad I am not the only mom who is not a game player. I do try to play games with them in the winter though because we are so cooped up. I did find one game that we all love. Apples to Apples.

Irene said...

You play a ton more than I do even without any games!!!

I don't mind games, the pretend stuff has never included an adult so my kids never even think to ask.

However, Daddy is still very much more the playmate than I. That is exactly the way it was when I was a kid, not that I actually intended it in any way. In fact, I always hated that mom didn't join in very much.

OK, you are making me feel more mom guilt...

Patti said...

I used to play games with Chad (nephew) all the time when he was little. We only tried with Candy Land so far with Maddie!
Poor little Alexis, i'm sure she would have settled for Polly Pockets... or something! :)

Kathryn said...

I love games. But playing games with small children can be maddening. It is wise not to even try.

dlyn said...

My most dreaded words were "Mommy, my tummy... bwaaaaaaaarp!" I like to play games :)

Amy said...

Oh I love games! In fact the kids yell at ME to get off the Wii! I do not however do the Barbie, Pony, Polly Pocket thing anymore. The older three burned me out on those. But I guess that's a good thing because the little one LOVES blocks and Tinker Toys, so it's a whole new world for us over here!

Em said...

Love this post!

I dont play games as i dont like to loose and this in not nice when you make kids cry, because a 30yr old i kicking their 9yr old nephews ass on his wii!

We love games around here, but I'll remember to never ask you to play Barbies with me. :)

so funny! I do play games with my kids but not until they are old enough to know the rules and play by them. I am a stickler about rules when it comes to board games.

You are funny. I'm a game player but we have to play by the rules which everyone has their own so it becomes battle of the rules.

Love the Texas post of you and your hubby, great pics.

And Congrats to your son!

You're a girl after my own heart, Kellan! The worst one of all is Monopoly,..aacckk! I would much rather draw, paint, play with playdoh, you name it than a board game! Video games are a bit more fun, but not that much! :)

i know i have said it before, but i like the fact you are "real"! i think that is awesome!

I must have OD'd on board games as a kid too, because I'm not so much into them as a Mom. And playing "Sorry" was one of my all-time most traumatic childhood experiences. I'm not kidding you!

Funny post. I get nervous for osme strange reason when it comes to board games except for a few. I am actually good at Trivial Pursuit. I can remember totally useless facts. LOL Hope you are having a good day. Enjoyed this post.

Too funny! We love board games ...now! My kids are older so it is actually fun, but when they were younger oh man I hated it!

Catlin Humes said...

I made the mistake of "playing a game" with a little boy I was babysitting. It turned into playing every single game at his house...but only for five minutes each. I wanted to tear my hair out, or at least yell, "pick one and stick with it for goodness sake!"

Eileen said...

I am so with you on this Kellan!! I get it, I understand it completely. I hate games, especially board games. My husband loved them, so it works out ok. BUT, at work, I get stuck playing candyland, don't break the ice, connect four and uno with the little ones to get them to feel comfortable and open up. Somehow that is different. maybe cause I am getting paid???

XOXOXO

Kellan, I thought I already commented and then I realized I only thought about it! EEEK!!!! You tell Alexis that I will play board games with her anytime! And color. I LOVE to color. You have to take Polly Pocket duty, though, Kellan. Those little things drive me nuts. HA! You're such a good Mom, and I just love ya!!!!

Rachel said...

I am so bad at games and I am not a game player at all. I get nervous and feel crazy and finally, I got to the age where I just said no. Now my hubby-he loves that stuff too and so thank goodness Max has him to play with. Thanks Kellan!!

I hated playing board games with my kids, but I, like you, played barbies and drove toy trucks around, colored, drew, danced, built sand castles. Anything but games.
If I did play candy land I took the purple plum one out (that one really set my daughter into a tail spin) and stacked the deck so the small child got the queen frosting and made it to the win RIGHT AWAY.
When I watch my "greats" (Leah's babies) I make stuff up, like Jared's stuffed bear named Snowy wants to knock over pretend garbage cans and has to be relocated to the forest. HE LOVES IT. Jared that is. Snowy isn't so sure.

Sue said...

I like to play things like Hide and Seek, but live in fear of Sorry and Princess Monopoly. Eeeek.

I'm a little confused here. What kind of games did Alexis want you to play?

I can't play games with children either. But it's because I always use their naivetee to my advantage...in other words...I cheat. I cheat so that I can win. So that I can beat a child at a board game. It's terrible and I know it so I don't even bother playing anymore.
