Yada, Yada, Yada ...

Alexis and my niece are playing in Alexis' bedroom.

I am in my room, helping Chloe with a project we have sprawled out on the floor.

Alexis and my niece have decided that Alexis will spend the night over at my niece's house and so Alexis is gathering her things to take for the sleep-over.

They are goofing off.

It is getting later and later by the minute.

They are getting out toys and playing and I can hear the ruckus from my room.

I scream, really loud and speak really fast, "Alexis. You need to get your stuff. You need to get your stuff together. You need to get your pajamas and your toothbrush and your underwear and whatever toys you want to take with you. And ... you are not going anywhere until you clean up that mess you two have made in that room," I say this all very fast - I say it and I mean it.

Chloe looks over at me from across my room with a look that says, "Could you be anymore obnoxious?" and it makes me smile.

I hear some scrambling going on down the hallway in Alexis' room and then I hear her say, very casually, and a little uppity, "Well ... you don't have to yell," and she mocks me, "Yada, yada, yada - yada, yada, yada ..."

The moment we heard her, Chloe's eyes met mine and we both fell back on the floor laughing.

On the upside ... Sometimes - I just need to ... simmer down!

So funny! I feel like sometimes I'm always yelling, but then I realize it's not so much that I'm yelling at them, more that I have to be louder to be heard...it seems our volume around here is always on high...:-)

I LOVE jenn's comment. Simma down. Simma down now. From SNL - CLASSIC. The upside is right. Isn't it funny what we get worked up for?

Laughing with your teenager is something that may seem small now, but I promise, it's a big deal. And, she will remember that. Love that you are able to.

Sometimes I forget that there are other speeds between totally calm and all-out nagging.

Funny girls.

Oh, so familiar. I love it when I have to repeat myself ten times or so, and by the tenth time I'm yelling, and they just look at me calmly and say, "why are you yelling Mom?"

Gee, I can't imagine why.

Hey Kellan! Thanks for stopping by! So what's it like having 15 year old twin girls. My husband is dreading it! :D

Hi, Kellan!

So glad to know you're alright, I was worried that flu bug had gotten the best of you!

I do the same thing, sometimes I just feel like no one is listening to me. It's frustrating! I guess the best thing we can do for ourselves (and our blood pressure) is laugh! :)

Kellan, missed you yesterday! Hope all is well...

Alexis is growing up much too fast! Yada, yada, yada should not enter the vocab until AT LEAST 7. You tell her!

Have a nice, relaxing weekend, Kellan! Hugs to you.

Heidi :)

I have this problem where I will get really mad at something the kids do (or don't do) and I start yelling, then suddenly burst out laughing.
Do you think maybe that could be the reason why they don't take me seriously?

nicki said...

Oh, I love it! She sounds like she's going on 21!

kim-d said...

YAY--SHE'S BACK! And, apparently, with a vengeance--HAHA! We're going to have to keep our eye on Alexis; I think she just MAY be a handful :). But, then again, most people tell me that when I open my mouth all they hear is blah-blah-blah...hehehe! Gotta love those kids who keep our feet firmly on the ground, huh?

Tot's Mom said...

Oh, don't simmer down. We need more stories like this to keep us entertained!

Isn't it funny how having kids is like putting a mirror in front of your face - and unfiltered mirror where you get a glimpse of how others see you?

Amy said...

great one! i am sure my boys have felt like saying that too me on MANY ocassion. i wish i was one of those people who could command respect with a calm, quiet, but meaningful voice. oh i wish! until then..... I'll JUST KEEP TO MY SHOUTING!!!

Sniz said...

Um, I yell instruction down the hall at the kids all the time. I have to remind my slowpoke daughter of the same things over and over because if I don't, she's like that kid on Family Circus, and wanders off into her own world. But occasionally she's on the ball and at time like that she is SOOO over me. So long suffering, so disdainful, as if her mom is always totally unreasonable and she NEVER forgets anything. Yeah. Good times.

So funny! Your girls will appreciate the laughter together when they are older!

Hahahaha...all mom's must do this. When I have these kinds of moments, Peter comes over and gives me a long hug.

I am in so much trouble when my childre reach that age, I can't keep a straight face at anything! Sleepovers are great huh, looks like you have 1 down 3 to go! We have a sleepover planned for Saturday night, the 2 oldest are out of here! We have a babysitter for the 2 youngest, and a wedding to go to. Do you think I know what I am wearing yet~ Ha, yeah right. Are pj's ok, because that is what I feel like wearing! :)
Have a great weekend Kellan!

That is a hoot! :) I remember when my mom and I used to do and talk silly like that! (not that we don't still, but not as often... :( )

I sounded JUST LIKE THAT two seconds ago. A good reminder for me to settle down too.

This is me! Tee hee, at least you can laugh about it after, that's the important thing :-)

I was away but I'm back now! We had a great trip to the Bahamas. I wasn't ignoring you :-)

I love the relationship you have with your kids where they can say something like that and you can laugh together. I am like that with my mom- but I know some uptight parents who would think it was disrespectful.

Amy said...

I love laughing with my oldest, it is the BEST!

Laurie M. said...

Some very good advice. Glad to hear your kids keep you in check.

ValleyGirl said...

Oh don't we all! It's quite humbling to hear stuff like that from your kids. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one getting reality checks from her children!!

You and me both. Love ya Kellan!

You mean there are more than two speeds? I think my freakout button must be stuck.
Cracking up laughing - simma down!

Good advice, we all need to "simmer down" sometimes!!!

Oh the joys of parenthood. I have already started to use first and middle names with my girls and every time I do, I cringe and realize I have truely become a 'mother', MY 'mother'.

Andrea said...

i'm glad to know i'm not the only one who needs to just simmer down!

Karen MEG said...

Simma down, mama, just simma down... too cute! You have the greatest stories, Kellan, just lift my spirits.

And thanks for your comment the other day; I felt the hugs, I really really did. You're a sweetheart!

yada yada yada... She's a hoot!

My daughter says "blah blah blah". And I have NO idea where in the world she could of gotten that *wink*

Happy Days said...

I wish I could keep quiet! But I am a yeller! Love, love the upside of your stories!!!

Momish said...

"Simmer down" could be my mantra! I love the graphic, I can so see how that scene went down! LOL!

Heather said...

Way to simmer down. That whole yadda, yadda, yadda could have caused a whole simmer up and boiler over effect.

Regina said...

Too funny!

Pam said...

I hope everyone is feeling better. I too need to simmer down- but yelling and screaming just comes so naturally to me!

dlyn said...

Just wait until you hear those same exact sentences come out of her mouth, yelling at her own daughter - it is worth the wait, trust me!

Tari said...

Me too! My kids are always mocking me and rolling thier eyes when I get yelling at them.

Frustration and hilarity rolled into one . . . oh, life with a teenager!

this sounds so familiar. gotta meet it with humor tho right? everything goes a little easier with a giggle pushing it along.

We all do, at times and then sometimes it's justified

Your a classy Mom to be able to be able to laugh at yourself and look on the upside!

God bless.

That is so funny.

YES! Simmer down...totally...I'm guilty of this also.

I tend to go a bit overboard sometimes. I will often yell the same thing over and over again to try and get my point across. "PUT YOUR JACKET ON, PUT YOUR JACKET ON PUT YOUR JACKET ON, PUT YOUR JACKET ON" My darling daughter will sweetly say to me, "mom you only had to say it once" but she forgets I can never say anything just once ;-)
