Boys Will Be ... Just Filthy Little Boys

I watch as he rushes down the hallway in the same pair of jeans he wore from the day before. He has the hoody on that I bought him; an Army green colored jacket that I have come to dislike - because he wears the thing nearly every day.

He races into the bathroom.

I hear him brushing his teeth.

"What are you doing?" I yell down the hallway.

"I'm brushing my teeth," he says through a mouthful of slobber and tooth paste - peeking his head around the corner of the bathroom door.

"Good," I say, amazed that he ran to do this without even being asked.

He emerges from the bathroom into the hallway and I say, "Why don't you brush your hair while you're at it, it's a mess."

He doesn't turn back to go find a brush, but runs in the other direction and screams back, "Yes ... but it doesn't stink."

"Is that why you brushed your teeth - because they stink," I yell after him.

"Yes," he screams, and he is gone in a flash, and I am certain, as I watch him vanish down the stairs that I see a swoon of dust chasing after him.

On the upside ... Stinky teeth, ratty hair, day old jeans and a hoody that I really should confiscate and donate to Goodwill, but don't because he loves the thing ... another proud moment. I am such a good mother.

Boys are just gross, aren't they? The good thing is that they are so lovable!

3 girls and 1 boy here. Boys are so disgusting.....and lovable. lol!

Hey, I had the BEST MAIL DAY ever! Thanks again for the fun gift card. I can't wait to go book shopping for ME. It seems like my book buying always revolves around the girls, so truly, I am excited! :)

Sounds like my boys and cutting their toenails. They only do it if their shoes don't fit anymore!! Boys? What are we supposed to do with them?

PS How is baby doing?

I'm thrilled for you that he brushed his teeth. My 10 year old's teeth are fuzzy and orange before he'll do anything about it. And only then because I've made him.

Boys.

Yes, yes you are!

and i should know i am a good mother too!

i still rather have the joys of boys then these attitudes of the one girl i have!!!

My son would go three days without brushing if I let him.

Ditto the hair combing.

He makes up for it in sweetness, though. :-)

He's clothed, has clean teeth and is happy, you are a good mother. What more could a little boy want or need? :)

HRH said...

You are singing my song...now just repeat two more times in my honor. I would keep the hoodie too because they may be animals, but we are their mommies.

You are a "good enough" mother and that is good enough!

I am SO looking forward to this!

With two of them around here it's gonna be a hoot :-)

♥ Lately my boy has been wiping his mouth on his shoulders of his shirt! SO nasty! Such a stinker. I keep telling him to stop! It doesn't seem to work! :)

You make me laugh. Thanks

This is so funny. My daughter has a sweatshirt that I really want to confiscate for the same reason. She has a closet full of clothes but she wears the same things repeatedly.

Kellan, are you sure my oldest son Andrew hasn't moved in with you by some chance? He is the same way, and it just drives me crazy sometimes! You ARE a good mother, he's just a boy, no further explanation is required! :O)

I love that picture! Boys are just too funny. I try not to be bugged that my boys wear their basketball jersey over and over, or that they their clothes don't match. I am just glad they can dress themselves. My boys don't care if their hair sticks up either, I ask if they want to comb it and they say "NO"! (we usually buzz it when it starts to stick up).

I enjoy your stories!!

JCK said...

And you are a great mother, Kellan! Knowing when to push an issue and when not to...now that takes talent! ;)

My BOY likes to use his shirt for a napkin. Even when he has a napkin in front of him!

Leah said...

is it bad to wear jeans more than once? *hangs head in shame* my kids and I do it all the time (unless I see obvious dirt anywhere!)!!

You should find another few hoodies in the same shade and then he can wear a new one everyday, and still have the same look. LOL!

Jared has a Cars t-shirt and spiderman jammies, and I have to keep close tabs on when those are clean or dirty because he's been known on SEVERAL SEVERAL SEVERAL occasions to dig one or the other out of the dirty laundry pile because that's what he wants to wear. all the time. dirty or clean.

That was a fun post Kellan!

Sharon Brumfield said...

Now at 18 the cleaning gets done on a regular basis--because of the girls--but the clothes????
I just have to say i don't claim him in public.

Wonderful World of Weiners said...

But he brushed his teeth without being asked!! (wonder if he decided on his own that his teeth stunk or if someone clued him in!)

Hallie :)

Jen said...

Wow, his teeth must have really smelled bad. I have a friend who informed me that since I have a boy, I MUST have a separate bathroom for him in my next house, because "trust me, you will not want to use the same bathroom he is using when he gets a bit older". Do you agree?

Every single pair of pants that my son owns now have a hole in the knee, but I refuse to purchase anymore because spring/shorts season is just around the corner. Boys just don't care which is frustrating and refreshing at the same time!

pb&j in a bowl said...

One more reason I'm happy I only have a girl. Wait- did I just say that I actually enjoy prissiness, sassy mouth, and changing clothes every hour b/c it is dirty?

Moms do what they can and continue on. It's the way we work.

Amanda said...

Boys always have THAT smell.

My brother smelt like rotten eggs when we were growing up.

And now, Aaron seems to have some sort of unsavory smell about him most of the time. And he's just 19 months!

LaskiGal said...

You are so totally a good mom! He sounds happy and healthy (even with stinky teeth!)

J, only 7 months mind you, is pretty stinky himself. He's layered in drool and spit up and crouching in a diaper that really should have been changed by now. But, he's giggling at me as I write this . . . so all is right with the world. Oh, boys . . .

jessica said...

brushing his teeth is the only thing i can get my boy to do without coaxing, because in preschool they scared him silly with all of the little "bugs" that live in there! ha ha! good post.

Kathryn said...

I am really not looking forward to the stinky boy phase. Three stinky boys at once. Oh my!

Patti said...

Honey haven't you heard - "grunge" is coming back LOL
Be glad he doesn't want those $80 jeans that look like they CAME from Goodwill already!

Eagles' Wings said...

Tell me about it.. I have two of em! If I were to go into details how gross they can be... I doubt they will have ANY friends ;-)

Courtney said...

Just remember how sweet he is though! I'm glad I don't have boys on days like this.

Kaci said...

Must remind myself that when I read your blog to not drink coffee at the same time...just had coffee come out of my mouth and the look of horror from my co-workers...LOL! :) Good morning!!

I'd pick messy hair over stinky breath everytime!

At least he didn't poop in your tub...yes, I deal with that yesterday.

Last week when Maggie was sooooo sick, Joe tried to put her to bed without brushing her teeth first. He says that she was practically asleep standing up & he just wanted her to rest. She lay down in bed and as soon as her head hit the pillow, she started to cry because, "Mommy says if I don't brush my teeth before bed, they will fall out while I'm sleeping!"
She actually LIKES to brush her teeth. So does Will.

At least they weren't fuzzy teeth! Ha.

My oldest has had some nasty dirty teeth lately because both of her top front teeth are loose, so she won't brush anywhere near them. I am constantly after her. Ugh

Hi Kellan,

Now that really does bring back memories. My son had a hat and sweatshirt he always wore around that age. He still has that hat somewhere. I guess little boys get attached to things like that. Cute.

Stacie said...

ah! well at least he did something about the smelly things.

I only had girls but I did have 3 younger brothers and boys are gross gross gross. Not my grandson though of course - he is just plain perfect!

My 3 year old has a favorite shirt and we cannot get him to wear anything else...I am worried what he will be like when he is older!

Too funny! My son is anal about his teeth, like his mama. The other day he was pestering me because we ran out of floss.

Kellan,

Count your blessings, at least he brushes his teeth when they stink instead of going around with stinky breath. Little boys will be little boys.

Boys errrr! Mine has turned me into the shower gaurd. I have to wait outside the bathroom door to do an inspection every morning. "GO BACK AND WASH YOUR HAIR!" "Don't forget to brush your teeth" How long before he'll do it on his own?

He brushed his teeth....without you asking??? MY! You ARE a good mother! Now, tell me how you did it...(and mine is a girl).

Take care! Yvette
PS. Still praying for your family.

I think recognizing that he needs to take care of the stinking things gives him (and you) a leg up as he approaches puberty....

So funny Kell! A coworker of mine brought her son to the office after a long hard day of school and demanded that I smell the top of his head so I could see what I had to look forward to. Hmmm so that smell moves north with time?!?!

Oh My! I have one child. One girl child. I do NOT understand boys. Not one single bit. No. My husband's grandson came to stay for a week with us last summer. He was 12. I could not get that boy to shower. I could not get that boy to brush his teeth. I could not get him to change his clothes...shirt / pants / shoes...whatever! Drove me absolutely NUTS. Finally, in desperation....I told my husband that he must DRAG him into the shower and make sure that he stood there and used actual soap and actual shampoo!! I wasn't going to send him back to his mother...unclean! But, I guess she's used to it by now. My husband told me that's just how boys are! Guess he was right...based on your story!

Shellie said...

At least the teeth are clean! Gotta love boys.

Bren said...

LOL! Love the title! I'm not looking forward to the day when my little guy doesn't let me wash and dress him.

LunaNik said...

Must be a boy thing. My step brothers are the SAME WAY. If it doesn't stink, then it doesn't get tended to. Weird.

Mo said...

At least he brushed his teeth when they reached "The Stink Point". It could be worse...lol

Joanna said...

At this point just battle the stink - the looks a girl will fix.

Amy said...

That was just too funny!! Hey my daughter has an outfit she wears all the time that I would love to BURN! So it's not just a boy thing ;-)

girlytwins said...

And I am considering having another baby in hopes of getting a stinky, filthy, sweet baby boy :)

At least he doesn't have stinky teeth and ratty hair. One outta two ain't bad.

Ann(ie) said...

I know already that I'm going to go crazy as the mother of a boy. I have an (albeit undiagnosed) case of OCD and I'm gonna need to say, 'whatever' more.

oh well.

Baby steps. ;)
