The "Old Lady" Blues

I'd had a pretty busy day.

It was a hard day of cleaning house, sorting through paper-work, cleaning out the refrigerator - you know - a hard day.

I took a shower about 3:00 in the afternoon. If I hadn't had to go out, I wouldn't have done much with my hair, but I knew I was going to have to go pick Little Billy up at school at 4:00, so ... I blew dry my hair with a round brush and pulled some of it up on the top of my head with a barrette. Let's just say ... it was straight and clean and smooth looking, but ... it was not my usual style (curled up - poofed out - sprayed with tons of hairspray). Nor, was it necessarily attractive.

I didn't care.

It was clean.

So, the afternoon wore on. Into the evening, my twins arrive home from school after softball practice.

My husband and the twins have stopped by Sonic to pick up dinner for the family and Chloe brings my bag of food and my drink up to my room and sits it on my desk.

She looks at my hair.

She says -- "Your hair's different."

I laugh - from the look on her face. I say, "Yes it is."

She says, "I'm not sure I like it," squinting her eyes. "Sort of makes you look old," and she then has the nerve to sit on the edge of my bed.

I stop laughing.

"What do you mean - old?" I whimper.

"Like an old lady - you know - old."

I stand up and walk over to the mirror above my dresser to see my hair.

She stands up and turns to walk out of my room. She looks back and says, "That's okay ---- if that's the look you're going for," and she's gone.

Yep - I'm going for ... the old lady look!

On the upside ... I am left alone in my room, looking at my old-lady hair-do in the mirror. I reach up and take the barrette out, run my fingers through my smooth tresses - fluff it a bit - walk into the bathroom and spray it with a TON of hairspray. I look back into the mirror. "That's better," I say out loud. "Nothing a little hairspray can't fix," and ... it was totally better. It must have been that barrette. I threw that STUPID gold barrette back in the drawer and went back to my desk to enjoy my delicious chili-cheese fries and peach iced-tea. Okay ... I know - old ladies probably love peach tea - but ... there aren't many I know that order chili-cheese fries (I could be wrong about this.)

My Grandma likes Chili-Cheese fries... Just sayin' ;)

I'm kidding! I love your stories. I would love to be a fly on the wall, in your house!

Hee hee...I love how honest your kids are!!

those kids tend to humble us... not exactly looking forward to when my daughter can make observations like that. my son, he sees nothing. :)

there ain't nothin' that chili cheese fries and hairspray can't fix

Tammy said...

It was definitely the barrette. Throw it away! :)

Mmm, chili cheese fries sounds great! Don't you just love it when the kids are so frank?

Well today I showered and DID NOT dry my hair. I let it air dry with a super ugly clip holding my hair back too, I couldn't go anywhere.

My little Taylor tells me that she wants me to get ready and shower before I go to her school class to help. I usually have been going right from the gym, since I have to be there at 10Am. So I amnot willing to give up my workout and I have not been to her class in a few months, I know I am a horrible mom. She just excpects me to be all pretty.

Now I am jonesing for some chili cheese fries!

You are far from the old lady look.

Like an old lady? Mean, mean. But I'd ditch the barrette. And I agree, hairspray always helps. And back-combing. I think I'm a Texan at heart (I love big hair).

And there's nothing better staying in pajamas, puttering around the house all day, and then finally taking an afternoon shower.

Dawn said...

That's why I cut my hair short... to prevent me from putting it up in a barrette every day (and looking old) ;)

Defintely the barrette's fault. Kids are priceless! Thanks for a good chuckle.

Hugs!
Kat

IS that a southern recipe? Chili cheese fries, peach iced tea and hairspray? You could put those "what not to wear snobs" right out on their snobby, judgemental touches if that really works! "You don't need a makeover. You need some chili cheese fries, peach iced tea and a bottle of hair spray!"
KEEP BELIEVING

Big hair rules! Barrettes are good for holding the hair up for cleaning. And ...this was SO funny. And the picture!!

Have a great night, Kellan! From another oldster Mama..with BIG hair.

Jenn @ Juggling Life said...

It is true that things made for kids (barrettes, leggings) make you look old(er) when reach *ahem* a certain age!

Kelli said...

I want a picture of your hair. I be the clip all afternoon did some good for the hairspray to make it "big" hair. I love big hair. Bigger, Better, more hairspray. Hehe. You should take a pic and threaten them with you showing up to their function with old lady hair. hehe. That would be good!

Yvette said...

Old??? Ouch!!! Neither of my girls have called me old yet, but Kayla loves to point out all of my gray hairs.

Great Story! Thanks for Sharing

Even if it stings, it must be nice to have someone around who is that honest. Because really, who at your young age wants to walk around looking old?!!

Bavani said...

Ahhhhhhh - I dread the day Divya starts talking and makes comments to me too! :)

Dad said...

Your not OLD, You're just getting better

Shellie said...

Just catchin up on a few weeks of bloggin! We all get better with age anyhow, and what I love is you don't have to worry about what everyone thinks or "looking cool" anymore. Plus, maybe she was just jealous. If I got a pair of shoes my daughter liked, she'd tell me I looked weird in them so she could wear them. Love the picture too. And the last 2 weeks worth of posts!

bermudabluez said...

A girl after my own heart...you are Kellan!! If I had to be on a desert island with one item....I would pick my HAIRSPRAY!!! I simply cannot live without it!!!

Em said...

I love the honesty from your kids!

I have no idea what a barrette is though!

kim-d said...

Oh yeah...the old lady look is definitely one we go for! HAHAHA! I would have had to go for the double cheese on the chili cheese fries after that comment! In fact, the whole rest of the story was a little bit lost on me once I read the word "Sonic." I am so jealous; I want Sonic! Rumor has it, we're getting one not too far from me this spring! YAY--slushes, here I come! Do old ladies like slushes? Well, this one does :)!!! Have a great day, Kellan Renee...

Its horrifying hearing comments from my children. They just don't know how to filter their sharp comments and sometimes try to be diplomatic but at this young age... quite bad at it.

Want to know the truth, just ask my 2 children... "Mummy your stomach is like a jelly.. boing boing"

Ha ha

Thanks for funny post, again.

Jen said...

That old lady picture is a hoot! I'm having trouble picturing you without the big hair. I really need to get my hair dyed soon, or someone will say I'm going for the old lady look!

Karen said...

As long as you're not coloring your hair blue I think you're good. And I've liked peach tea since it came out - like when I was a kid!

Kelly said...

Kids think anyone over 20 is old. It's amazing what a little hairspray can do though isn't it?? If I'm not having a good hair day, the rest of me isn't having a good day! LOL

Amanda said...

HAHAHA! All kids like telling their moms they look old, or weird, or something else that is unflattering.

I've often wondered about hairstyles as I grow older though. I don't think I can have mine waist length when I'm 60....that would be too weird. LOL!

Wonderful World of Weiners said...

And I always thought, for the most part, barrettes make you look younger!

Guess I learned something!

Hallie :)

"If that is the look you are going for"

LOL. You have a comedian in the house. :)

Kathryn said...

Kids. What ya gonna do?
I love that top pick. Made me laugh out loud!

Jacki said...

Haha....that is funny.

You are much braver than I for going out without having your hair done. I don't go out to check the mail without styling my hair and putting on my makeup.

My Goodness said...

Wow...your kids can be brutal!!

Here's to hoping that you can fix everything with your hairspray!!

Amy said...

are kids more observant and truthful? or maybe they just see things differently? matt recently told me that my eyes were cracking - they were bloodshot!

JO-N said...

But you look great! Young or old doesn't matter. What matter most is whether you look good or not.

Joanna said...

I love the smell of hairspray and some sizzling hair from the curling iron.

I had my glasses off and I noticed I have a deep wrinkle across my nose that is usually hidden. Eeek!

Chili cheese fries would sure help right now cuz that's the look I'm going for. :)

Ashlee said...

That picture was awesome! I got a laugh out of the old lady smoking the cigar. :0) Chili cheese fries sound soooo yummy!

missy said...

Unless it was the look you're going for??? That is hilarious!!

Lizzy in the Burbs said...

Kellen, you are precious! :o) You'd look pretty in a paper bag! Kids just get used to us looking how they think we're supposed to look, when it's different, they don't like it.

I've never had peach tea before, but it sounds good! Chili cheese fries are amazing!

O.k. I have read two blogs now that have talked about Sonic and it sounds so Good. I hope you enjoyed your chili cheese fries even if you did have old lady hair.

LaskiGal said...

OK--loving that pic! Hee hee. Oh, and I think hairspray AND chili-cheese fries can fix just about anything!

Step away from the gold barrette...

What is with the "old" talk lately. First you were called a grandma and it's just progressed from there.

I swear you do not look old! No matter what anyone says.

Melissa said...

Ouch! Do you ever get the feeling that kids should be seen and not heard? ;)

Ashley said...

Kids tell it like they see it. My daughter told me she was going to buy me some face cleaner that was advertised on a commercial to "wash off all my red spots!" I have freckles. What can you do but laugh it off.

Melek said...

wow, nothing like a little child-like honesty.... glad you had some emergency hair spray on hand :)

I know that isn't what you wanted to hear, but hey at least they kept you from looking like an old lady in public. I love the relationship that you have with your kids.

I know you're only as old as you feel, and sometimes I just feel...old. On those days, I truly look the part.

That is cute, nothing like a little truth from your kids. You know, if that's the look you are going for. And I wish I had hair I could fix with hairspray, it has never worked like that for me, but I can pull it back with sunglasses and get a pretty good look.
