The Rain

It was a day of rain.

The day started out as most days. My children rolled out of their warm beds and made their way out of my house to go to school. In their paths they left discarded pajamas, cuddling blankets and wet towels on the floor. I went through my quiet house and put all things back in their places and then sat down to enjoy my morning coffee.

I watched the rain through the window.

To some ... the rain provokes feelings of loneliness - sadness. With it's dreary skies and its gray face. To me, it is a relief. A time for the world to cleanse itself. A time for me to slow down.

Peaceful.

Quiet.

It is dark in my house as the day wears on, and yet it is the middle of the day. I am always sort of stunned by how the darkness soothes me and how easily I am drawn into it. I have to wonder where this joy comes from. Wonder why I am at home in the darkness.

I want it to rain.

I want there to be this darkness in the middle of the day - to envelope my house.

To envelope me.

I like the way it makes me feel.

Cozy and warm ...

The silence of it ...

The calming affect it has on me.

I think the rain cleanses me - like I am the earth.

It's as if the darkness renews me - like I am somehow pulled back into the womb.

I do appreciate the warmth of the sun, but ... I love it when it is sometimes replaced by the rains.

I am alone, I know ...

running towards the darkness ...

embracing it ...

yearning for it ...

allowing it to seep easily ... into my joyful soul.

I am alone ...

And yet ...

I am peaceful.

It rained her today too. Lots of rain.

The rain was probably good for the soul--with all your family is going through.

That precious baby will be in our prayers! And you and your family.

But I'm so confused because it's only 7:15 on Sunday night here. How the ... ? Where the ... ? Your kids already went to school on Monday?

I need some peaceful rain to help me quiet down and figure it out.

I, too, love the rain. There is something so incredibly soothing about the whole process. That is, until my child starts screaming because she is scared of thunder. . .

Kellan, just getting caught up with your news....and has it ever been a rollercoaster for your family. I am glad your little baby nephew is doing well so far. I am sure there will be ups and downs, but every good day is a step in the right direction. He, and your entire family, are in my thoughts.

Hugs to you all - Heidi

Oh, me too!!! I love summer thunderstorms! I go out on my front porch and watch the lightening dance and listen to the thunder clap. I love it. Such a cozy feeling. I started taking my boys to the porch with me this past summer to watch too and they aren't scared of storms at all. They love it. Makes me so happy.
What a beautiful post!

I love rainy days, too! Especially if I don't have to be anywhere and can just sit and listen to the pitter patter of the drops on the roof. Beautiful post, Kellan!

So happy to hear that your little baby is doing well, keeping you all in my prayers!

I love rainy days too :) - used to have lots of them and thunderstorms were just so common in Singapore (where I come from). We just get used to it.
I hope your little angel is getting stronger everyday physically and in his soul :)

It sort of rained here on Saturday night. Well. Okay. It was sleet. And it 'rained' ice pellets for 10 hours straight! And it was loud and the wind was howling and I was afraid our house might blow away in a freak winter snowy tornado so I barely slept at all and it was terrifying! (But the Little Goat and The Husband conveniently slept through it ALL.)

Still, I'm glad you enjoyed the rain. A peaceful, soothing rain is just so.....perfect. Just right for tea and blogging. (I would've said for tea and reading a book, but come on people, it's 2008 here....) ;)

Great post! I love the rain too. It makes the day so quiet and calm.

THopgood said...

There's nothing more calming than crawling under the covers at night to a good old fashion rain storm...

Unfortunately, the closest I've gotten to that comfort in the last 5 monthes is the sound of sleet tapping on the windows and snow plow engines at full throttle...

...I'm off to do the rain dance.

I love those dark rainy days too, especially if I can be alone which is almost never lol.

Wonderful post. YOu made me feel there!

Oh and thanks for all the baby updates. I'm praying. He's tiny wrinkled arm almost made me cry! He's so precious!

i like the random rainy days...especially when i have tons of work, nowhere i have to drive to, and there is thunder involved. something about thunderstorms makes me feel all snugged up in the house and safe... plus, Zeke will sleep all day bc he knows it's too wet to go outside.

Leah said...

I enjoy a nice rainy afternoon SOMETIMES! It's a nice excuse to be lazy, an extra excuse to toss in a movie or grab some books and snuggle up the kids. A nice excuse to further put off a dreaded errand, etc. SOMETIMES. but when you live in WA, the rain can get a little OLD. FAST. Like THREE MONTHS AGO. So talk to me again in Sept or so, okay? LOL!!

PlanningQueen said...

It is sad sometimes how we don't appreciate nature enough. Hearing you appreciate the rain makes me think about how I used to moan about it raining, and now that we are on water restrictions due to lack of rain, I look forward to every drop.
