Hell Must Have Frozen Over

I am screaming through my house - looking for Little Billy.

He has been home from school for about half an hour and it is time for him to start his homework.

I can not find him anywhere and I am getting annoyed - to say the least - screaming and walking and screaming and walking ...

WHERE IS THAT BOY?!?

And then ... I go into my bathroom and look out the window - into the front yard - and this is what I see ...

I had to RUN and get my camera to take a picture of this phenomenon!

I had to zoom my camera in a little closer to make sure I was in fact seeing what I thought I was seeing ...

Could it really be possible?

Is that really my 10 year old son - lying out there in the sun, on the driveway, on his skateboard ramp with his pogo-stick by his side on the ground - READING A BOOK?

And not just any old book - but ... HARRY POTTER?

I almost FELL out of the window!

On the upside ... I quit my SCREAMING and just let him be. I knew it would not be long before I might hear that -- *squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak* -- of that pogo-stick again, but ... until then I had to enjoy this miraculous moment. This moment when my 10 year old son, put down his toys to actually READ A BOOK! I could not believe my eyes!

He's my kind of guy--it's always best to read a book with the sun warming your face (that is unless you've managed to never get out of bed for the day!).

I love it when I catch my son reading! But I don't think I've ever found him outside, reading. Priceless.

I wouldn't even make my boys wear a helmet if they were on the ramp doing that.

KEEP BELIEVING

next year you should bake a cake for him, then tell him it was for the one year aniversary of him reading a book. hehe (or do it on the one month. hehe) so cute. Are you feeling all better?

What a magnificent sight! Little Billy is just TOO cute for words! :)

Little Billy is so unpredictable but he is a great son to have. Sometimes, he needs you to nag but sometimes, you almost fall out of the window seeing him read without being nagged. Sometimes, he made you feel like Horton but when you are in the hospital, he made you feel so loved.

Any ideas on what caused such a phenomenon? Maybe it's something in the skating ramp? Or perhaps it was the effect of the pogo stick jogging something loose in his brain?

Whatever it is, if you could figure out a way to bottle it up, I'd buy some...I have an 11 year old son that needs to be exposed to that!

And that right there is the TRUE magic of Harry Potter. My son just whipped through the first 6 1/2 books in less than a month. Unbelievable. He will not put them down.

What a cute little boy!! And reading is good...very good!! My daughter has just rediscovered reading...at the ripe old age of 22. And I'm so glad she did. Hope you are feeling much better, Kellan!

Aren't the good surprises nice? I'm so glad you were able to stop walking and screaming, but I will admit I am impressed you could do both at the same time. Even more proof of "Mom powers" :)!

Have a wonderful day, Kellan Renee.

I really don't understand the appeal of Harry Potter, but if it makes him read a book, it must be pretty darn good! Ha! Love the setup he made himself.

Right now, my surprises come when he tells me he needs to go pee!

I love it! What a perfect place in the sunshine to learn to love a good book.

Oh how I long for that day. I am still working on teaching my 6 year old to read and I keep promising him that reading is wonderful and eventually he will read interesting books. These early reader books are pretty dry ;)

He's got quite the set up there doesn't he? What a great picture! Glad you captured the moment.

Dawn said...

That is such a sweet picture. Harry Potter is a quite a book for a ten year old to be reading- great vocabulary, not easy reading either.

Buncha Blue-Eyed Monkeys said...

Outside. Reading. Wow.

And he really didn't have time to stop pogo-ing, run in the house, grab the book, run out of the house, lay down and begin reading 'cause he heard you yelling for him. That was actually planned. Awesome.

I'm glad you didn't fall out the window!

Jen said...

How cute!

People can say what they want but.... Harry Potter made readers out of all my boys. I love the fact that he is all stretched out in the sun.

Have a great day,

I remember being ten when I discovered I enjoyed reading. It was the Caddie Woodlawn series (little house on the praire stuff)
I haven't stopped since.
I remember realizing that first good book was like a movie, but I could put the book down unlike a movie, and pick it back up anytime. That was before fast forward on the VCR I guess : )

What a fabulously funny story! I think maybe it might be wedding story fodder?

Maybe?

Although he still hasn't hit the teen years. No doubt there will be much more fodder there:-)

That is wonderful! Good for Billy! How cute. And good for you for documenting it....just in case it never happens again.

He must have known he was going to read outside when he took the book out there...I wonder if that's where he was planning on reading it. I guess he IS ten. A wooden ramp is probably just as comfy as a lawn chair to him!

mama meji said...

Oh wow! That really is great. Good that you caught a shot of him. My son is a toddler and everytime he picks up a book and seemingly study it makes me real happy and excited too.

That's great, Kellan! I tell you, those Harry Potter books have done wonders for kids who don't really like to read. Great stuff, and adorable photos!
