Can You HEAR ME NOW?

My mother is often around.

She does not live far from my sister, brother and I and so she often comes over to spend time with me and the kids.

She spends time with us at the lake.

She often comes along on family vacations.

She lives alone and is happy to have her time and space - but, she also enjoys the time she spends with her family.

Sometimes, though - she takes trips and is gone for periods of time.

She gets a nice little vacation.

She gets a nice little break ... from us.

We get a nice little break ... from her (tee hee).

Recently, my mother's youngest sister and her husband left their home in West Virginia and flew down to Texas.

They planned a trip with my mother.

They got into my mother's car and headed off together on a cross country road trip.

They were going to ... Colorado

And then ... Wyoming and Montana.

And on to Washington.

On a Thursday morning, I picked up the phone and dialed my mother's cell phone.

She answered quickly, "HELLO!" she SCREAMED into the phone.

"Mother," I said.

"YES - HI!" she bellowed.

"Where are you?" I asked.

"WE'RE JUST ABOUT TO CROSS OVER INTO WY-OM-ING," she is talking SO LOUD, like she does when she talks to folks that can't speak English - I have to hold the phone away from my ear.

"Mother," I say.

"YES."

"I can hear you," I whisper.

"Oh."

Like I said ...

We get a nice little break ... from her too.

On the upside ... I honestly don't think she believed she was actually YELLING ... ALL THE WAY FROM WY-OM-ING ... but ... if I had gone out on my back porch ... I'll just bet I could have heard her and ... since I DO speak English - I'd have understood EVERY WORD!

How funny! Maybe if you whispered to her she would have started speaking normal. LOL!

I hope she has a great trip!! Sound fun. :)

oh yeah, enjoy your break ;)

Awww, and that's why we love moms, right?

It's funny how the whispering trick works not only on children (sometimes) but also on parents.

Here's hoping she has a great time on vacation and you all spend some lovely time together when she gets back (with parents living 15 minutes from us, I get it!).

Ha ha! Your mother must still be pretty young to be taking a trip like that. I'm embarrassed to say I can see myself doing something like that-- talking kind of loud because I know I'm far away and so keenly aware of the distance that I involuntarily raise my voice.
LOL

My husband does that. He's very loud anyway and when he talks on the phone, he kicks it up another 10 decibels or so. Drives me wild!

That's so funny! Wyoming is a long way from Texas - lol.

Ha! My hubby's a cell phone yeller. I think he assumes the connection is not as good on a cell phone as it is on a land line.

That's great! I can't stand when I'm sitting with someone having a normal conversation they they get on their cell phone and are talking so loudly that the people in their house next door can hear them. It's a phone! It has the capability to trasfer normal volume speech across long distances! We're not talking string and can here are we?

My husband shouts when he talks into the phone, I think it's cause of those tin cans they had to use back in the day.

My mom does this sometimes...we live in Germany, and she lives in Michigan. :)

To be fair, she sometimes does it when we're in the same room, too...

On a bloggy "skills" note, I love how you do your letters BIG and little for emphasis...I don't know how to do that using Blogger.

Have a blessed week, Kellan.

That newfangled technology is hard for the old folks. My parents have every single picture still on their digital camera from when they bought it. Now that the memory card is full, they just can't figure out "what is wrong with this camera? Why won't it take pictures?!" You just have to laugh.

A cross country trip sounds so fun right now. Or at least a trip to Kentucky to see Boo.
Thanks for the laugh this morning, I needed it.

My husband does that when he is talking to his family in Indiana. I keep trying to explain that he doesn't have to yell loud enough to be heard but.......

check out our last day of summer on my blog if you get a chance.

Kathryn said...

But how cool is she for not only HAVING a cell phone, but for keeping it ON! ;)

Janet said...

There's something hideous about talking on a cell phone that makes me talk louder too. Hope she has a good time!

Saw your post linked from goodandcrazypeople.blogspot.com.

My issue now is that my parents just moved to Guatemala and can't get the hang of Vonnage. They walk so far away from the home base that it keeps hanging up on me. In a 20-minute conversation, we spent 15 of those minutes calling each other back with her explaining why she THINKS it is dropping it. I guess I should be thankful she is speaking in a normal tone, right?

Stacie said...

lol...my stepdad yells like that too...like he is ordering into the speaker at Burger King or somethin.

April said...

That is completely adorable!!

This is so funny.
Tess recently asked me how to spell something she should have been able to sound out. Instead of telling her, I kept saying it louder and making the syllable breaks more distinct.
We were all howling about that one for a few days.

Isn't that cute?! Kind of like when people put their eye up to the "view finder" on a digital camera.

Moms are the best, aren't they?
