HELL-O ... Am I Talking To The Wall Over Here?

It's always so rewarding to realize that your kids hear what you say.

Learn the lessons you've been trying to teach them.

Express themselves or say something that reflects ideas that they've learned from you.

This happened recently when I was sitting by the pool.

Alexis and my niece were swimming - splashing around - kicking and waving their arms and legs - diving.

Before too long, they settled down and swam over to sit on the step on the side of the pool. They were talking and laughing and then suddenly ... one of them sees a roly-poly floating in the water.

They grabbed a bucket and fished it out - saved it - and set it down gently on the edge of the pool

My niece must have been going to kill the thing ... because Alexis suddenly screams, "NO -DON'T KILL IT! DON'T KILL IT!" and she cups her hand over it to protect it.

I was so proud.

I smiled.

We often talk about how you shouldn't kill God's creatures - not even the bugs and ... especially not for the fun of it.

I was so pleased that Alexis had learnt this lesson - showed compassion for this nasty little bug.

But, then ...

Just about the time the pride beaming off of me was about to blind my niece and daughter with its brilliant LIGHT ........

Alexis ...

Takes her hand off the bug ...

Picks up a stick off the ground ...

And says ...

"Let's play hockey with it - instead," and she wacks the roly-poly ... clear across the sidewalk and down into the grass.

(*sigh*)

On the upside ... I guess Alexis hasn't been listening to a thing I've been saying. Looks to me like she's been paying closer attention to her redneck brother!

Well, at least it had a chance as a hockey puck! Poor little bug. I try to teach my boy not to kill bugs too. My dad taught me when I was little and it is something that I can still hear him telling me.

Melissa said...

LOL! I guess you need to be a little more specific about bugs, huh?

Don't kill them and don't play with them either...;)

kelsey said...

oh yes kids LOL

dani said...

well, kellan, you didn't tell her that playing with them was off limits, HA!!!

LOL! Those roly polies are hard to resist ROLLING!

One of the ways I have consoled myself about having only boys is that they are allowed and EXPECTED to kill bugs for the fun of it (God's creatures or not!!!)

I firmly agree in not killing God's creatures, as long as those creatures haven't invaded my house or landed on me. If either of those happen, well, they are fair game. Maybe you should be more specific....no killing bugs and no playing with them either. :)

Kids keep us on our toes, don't they? They truly do come up with "the darndest things."
Thanks for checking in today...my mother actually started her career in a small town in SC...I'm still changing some names and places to protect the innocent! LOL

Kathryn said...

Oh no! Poor bug!

I am forever trying to convince my boys not to hurt the bugs. ;)

That's hysterical.

Jenn @ Juggling Life said...

Maybe he (she?) enjoys being a hockey puck.

YeS YOU ARE LOL!

(even a girl in a hospital can have some humor)

Michelle said...

Well... playing with it doesn't seem so bad, does it? I mean they do have a protective shell and all, right? And maybe hockey doesn't really hurt them.... And maybe she's just really creative in her torture methods.

Poor little Poly Poly as they are known at our house. My girls love them so much they accidentally squeeze them to death all the time. Or I find them crawling across my kitchen tiles...Gotta love kids.

Joanna said...

You can take the girl away from the rednecks but you can't get the rednecks out of the girl.

AW ! !

Becky said...

LOL! That was delightfully, unexpectedly hilarious, Kellan.

Yep, I'm not big on killing bugs UNLESS they pose a threat to us, or invade our home...then they are gonners.

Amanda said...

I don't know what kind of bug that is, i will have to google it, but thanks for the laugh! I hate creepy crawlies :(

Jacki said...

HAHA! I love roly-polys and remember playing with them as a kid. I'd wait until they rolled up into a ball then I'd flick them.

My Emma is very bug-friendly except for when it comes to bees and spiders. When she spots any other bug her first response is "Don't kill it!"

Amy said...

LOL!:)

At least she wanted to put the bug to good use...not just kill it.:)

Kel said...

HA - that's thinking for ya...she can incorporate mom's lesson AND have fun too! :) It is pretty funny (and exciting) when you hear or see them do something you've taught them...makes me feel like I've succeeded a little bit as a mother. My daughter ALWAYS trys to boss her brother around by telling him things I've already told them like, "Mom says your supposed to pick that up." I always chuckle to myself.

Have a great day!

Brother teachings will win every time. Too cute!

Better than my son's idea to scoop dead bugs out of the pool and pin them to a piece of cardboard with arrows designating body parts... raising little scientists over here.

Tanja said...

Alexis cracks me up! I can't believe she started to play hockey with it....like that's better?!?

Courtney said...

Guess she didn't realize playing hockey with it would kill it? Oh well.

Btw, stop by today please.

OHmommy said...

Oh, Alexis.

That is a great story. Roly Poly Hockey. I love it.

Lindsey said...

I have to say that's what I would do too:) Sorry Kellan, I'm with your girl on that one!! Hehehe. BTW I think it's awesome that you started the other two sites and also that you try to comment on everyone's blog, you are an awesome blog buddy!!!

Queen of My Domain said...

Well at least she didn't outright kill it. But that is still funny that of all sports she came up with hockey.

Sally said...

HAHAHA I love it!!!! Alexis is my kind of kid!! :)

Ellyn said...

Too funny. That made me smile. That lesson is not taught in our home. I am not a huge fan of bugs and smash them at will. All other of God's creatures are under my protection.

Oh my gosh I was just about to say how sweet that was...till I read the ending. FUNNY KIDS!

That's priceless.

We were at my mother's last week and she bought some things for the kids. They both said, "Thank you, Grandma," WITHOUT PROMPTING!!!!
I was so proud. And they didn't spoil it either.

Love love love that she wanted to play hockey with it!!

Our rule is...

bug in house = death (it's my house!)
bug outdoors = can live (it's their house!)

HA! I so did NOT see that coming!! I was become very impressed with little Alexis (as we are all about killing bugs). Now I'm just impressed with how funny she is!!

Still laughing! That's as bad as my cousin taking his daughter to a baseball game and sitting all tall and proud while his daughter sang "Jesus Loves Me" and just as quickly trying to hide under the seat as she yells "Doesn't a cold beer sound good, Daddy?"

AHAHAHAHAHAH!

at least she didn't kill it or let her cousin kill it either!! playing hockey with it... is still letting it live... at least for a little while. :)

That is TOO funny. I'm fine with leaving the bugs alive if a) they're outside and b) they're not spiders. If you're in my house and you're a bug, you're fair game!

Kelly said...

Great story!! This summer my 6 year old has been addicted to bugs. It would have ended up in one of our many bug houses. Would you believe we actually have what is called a Roly Poly Playground?? :)

One Scrappy Chicklet said...

But mom,,,,, she was listening. You said do not KILL them, you never once said do not make hockey pucks out of things now did you? I for one have been a mom for several years and I know for a fact this statement has never come out of my mouth. LOL

Hugz,
