I'm Not Really That Big A Dork

Before I went to the BlogHer conference a couple of weeks ago, in San Francisco, I wrote the post Help - I Am Stepping Way Out Of My Comfort Zone. In it I joked about taking this old-lady-grocery-cart to haul all of my stuff around to the conference sessions.

Many people commented that I SHOULD NOT take one of these old-lady-carts, as I would embarrass myself - look silly. No one said exactly that - but, that's what they meant.

So ... I didn't.

But - I knew I had to have something to haul all my stuff - my laptop and binders and the pens with On The Upside on them - my little swag gifts - all my stuff. I also needed somewhere to put the swag gifts we were given.

If I am anything - I am organized. I have always been organized. I don't do anything or go anywhere - unorganized.

So, when I went to BlogHer - this is what I took:

This little black rolling case held my laptop, pens, bag with my swag gifts, camera - all my stuff in it. The polka dotted see-through bag I'd use when I didn't want to drag the rolling case around. I got these black (and polka dot) bags at Michaels and I just loved them. The BlogHer tote was given to everyone by Cafepress.

I just thought I'd show you this, so that everyone that read my post before, wouldn't worry that I actually took one of those old-lady-carts.

I have to say - this case/purses from Michaels worked out wonderfully. But ... I totally believe that all the matchy-matchy - totally organized - look ... probably bugged people.

Nothing bugs other women more than a woman that is carrying her crap better than someone else - you know.

Nothing bugs other women more than a woman that looks put together.

Nothing bugs other women more than a woman that has accessories with polka-dots on them.

I hope I didn't rub anyone funny, but I often do, as me - and my organizing obsessiveness - comes across as OBNOXIOUS and I know it.

I'm sorry about that.

I don't do it to bug people.

I do it to keep the things in my life in order!

On the upside ... Honestly --- I don't give a hoot what other people think about me - I never have. If I did BUG anyone - that's their problem. They can just go over to Michaels and buy some of those bags for themselves - they had them in several other colors. And - I have to say ... I was not as put together as all these bags might have have made me look - but ... I don't mind if it came across like that. Honestly ... I can use all the help I can get!

Yes - The tote is a scrapbooking tote - from Michaels - very cool little case!

Kellan, I bet everybody just thought look at that. She's organized and coordinated. The ones who might not have liked you for it are the ones you don't want to be friends with anyway. I am not very well organized or coordinated and if I had seen you I just would have thought what a great job you were doing.

I, like you, am very organized... And I LOVE the pull along tote! ... Is it a scrapbooking bag?... I should get one to take to church, because I ALWAYS end up holding not only my Bible and Bible study lessons, but all the kids' Bibles and Sunday School papers. *lol* A bag like that would come in handy! ;)

I would give anything to be that organized.

I have good intentions. Hopefully that counts.

kellan, i have "organizational envy"... i start out with good intentions, but it all goes to pot pretty quickly. thus, i am quite impressed with your skills:)
i could do the coordination, though; i'm all about that. further, black and white is my thing (so is pink and green but sometimes it's just toooooo sweet;). so, i bet you totally rocked at the convention!!!
have a great friday, kel:D

dani

I'm totally over annoying people with my efficiency and organization, too. They all love it when it's working for them.

Dad said...

I don't think you are an old lady! !

Love the polka dot bags! I think I annoy people with my organization as well. You're not alone!

Jaina said...

If anyone got annoyed at you for having it organized and together, then they probably have their own issues to work through. I think it's wonderful that you're organized, it makes life a whole lot easier.

I so with I was that together and organized haha

Having four kids makes you super organised!
I wouldn't be able to leave the house otherwise.
The matching bags are nice Kellan.

I love my little old lady cart - I take it everywhere and when I get tired I stuff my children into it!

I have more concerns about the matching bags - that's super organised!!!

I would do it to bug people, but then I'm kind of passive aggressive and obviously need to get more of a life. ;)

Hope you had a ball at BlogHer, Kellan. :)

There is nothing wrong with being organized and cute organization is just icing on the cake. If someone didn't like it OH WELL.

Thank you for your sweet comments on my blog, I am so PROUD and totally in AWE of him right now. It takes a big set to make the decisions that he is making especially right now.

Have a great weekend.

You know...that day was my first visit to your blog and I remember well the post about the old lady cart. Because I wasn't familiar with your style yet, I DID think that you were serious and I'm pretty sure that I was one of the repliers! LOL

I like to say: mind over matter; I don't mind if you don't matter.

Can't remember what film that came from, but it works for me when I start thinking I care what others think about the way I look.

I still think you are a pretty awesome woman. :-)

And thanks for visiting my blog!

I totally would have gotten the cart and not given a hoot what anyone else said!! You know they all have one of those carts hiding in the back of their closets somewhere.

Brenda said...

Unlike you, I am completely disorganized, and I'm full of envy for those who have it all together and remember where they put it. :-)

duchess said...

I'm glad you cleared that up.
I was wondering about the rolling cart thingy.
Glad you came to your senses and who doesn't love bags?

Monogram Queen said...

Those old lady carts crack me up! I remember people using them when I lived in Pennsylvania (city). Never saw one down here in SC I don't believe!

Hey you do what you do for you. Screw everyone else!

Kaci said...

Kellan!!! I love those bags!! Polka dots are so in right now! :)

I am completely in love with those totes! I will have to run over there to see if they still have any. As for people being irritated because you were 'organized' or 'well put together' - you're right, that would be their problem, maybe next time they can call you ahead of time for some advice!

I remember going to a scrapbooking party once and a friend showed up with one of those cool totes. I was in awe of her organization just as I am of yours. If I would have been at that conference, I would have probably had a tiny purse and would have had to have been borrowing things like pens and paper from the organized ladies like you.;)

Nadine said...

I think you were very smart. I liked how you organized everything.

I love organized people...especially if they share their organization secrets with me :)

Eagles' Wings said...

I would LOVE to have some of those organisers. I also could get all the help I can get.

Courtney said...

Based on your previous posts about Blogher, you rubbed some ppl the wrong way anyway so screw them. It may have been your mad organizational skills or not, but you are you! I wouldn't have hated on you, but been a little jealous, I am not at all organized so we are kinda polar opposites.

Whenever I go to a homeschoolers conference, I take my husband's small rolling carry-on suitcase.
Who wants to CARRY all that stuff...my shoulders hurt just thinking about it! Your choices were perfect and look perfect for you. Blessings, E

I"m a pretty organized person too, especially when I travel...almost to the point of being anal! LOL I'm a bag/purse lover so I get to use a lot of my favorites when I travel. If I had been there I would have admired your bags....too bad we don't have a Michael's where I live!

Leah said...

cute stuff Kellan! There's nothing wrong with being organized the put together. I'm sure no one had a second thought about it (except wondering where you got the cute stuff...)

ALF said...

Do you really have pens with "on the upside" on them? That is freakin' awesome. My dad has a farm and I'm trying to get him to name it Spaniel Ranch. I don't think it's working.

Heather said...

You are my hero. Had I been able to go, I may just have brought the old-lady cart.

Marmarbug said...

Hey I am an organized freak so I think it was a good idea!!! Cute bags!

Cute bags! Must get me some!

And your Dad's comment made me chuckle.

Nancy said...

Honestly? I didn't notice any cart, then again I was there to meet people, not to judge or any other form of drama.

I'm sure glad to have met you Kellan, your kindness overshadowed your cart, lol!

I DO love those totes and now I'm hoping the Michaels by my house still has them.

Joanna said...

It's cute!! People were irritated over that? Maybe you should have run over their toes with the pull along. I know I would have felt better. :)

I love your matching polka dot bags. That is one thing I would love to have is matching luggage/bags - very cool!

Have a great weekend!

And I love Cafe Press :)

The people who may have been bugged by your coordinating bags and organization were simply jealous. But you are so right, women really get catty about that sort of thing!

And no way could you ever look like an old lady. No way!

Your *luggage* would not have bothered me in the slightest, on the contrary I think you would have looked very spiffy!! :)

I am one of those who is totally disorganized outwardly, but I do know where everything is. And I do not begrudge matching totes. I think they're very cool. I just know that even if I went out and bought a whole matched set of stuff, I would still look like I'd been dumpster diving.

TheCynicalOptimist said...

I like it and if they didn't- they were just jealous of your wicked cool polka dots!

Amanda said...

I know that looking put together dosen't bother me. I just want to be like that person! I think I'm organized, but there is always one more step I could have taken to be like that person.

So, like you said, I wouldn't worry about what others thought and just carry on like you always do, happy go lucky and organized!

The Boyds Family said...

I say, if you could have gotten through security with those granny shopping carts, why not?? HA!!

Seriously though, I totally get what you mean about your togetherness putting people off....I have that exact same problem. But once they get to know me and how I operate, they usually overcome their initial impression and if they aren't willing to get to know me, than I'm not missing anything anyway.

Kellan,

I hope noone said something nasty to you about it, prompting this post. You have a right to carry whatever you want. I personally admire woman who look so organized and wish I could be the same. Plus, being out of your comfort zone, organization helps you be more comfortable.

I admire you. Congrats. on being in the top 100 Parenting Blogs!

I love those bags. Very cute. Don't be surprised if you don't see me with the same next year...lol.

Wow, you were organized. I would have a) not brought swag b) not advertised myself as well as you did c) had my hands full constantly, making conversation difficult and d) been so jealous when I saw you. But now I know for next year, right? ;)

Shari/"Whiger" said...

You go, girl. I try not to care what others think of me. I am not that organized, but if I saw how well put-togehter you were, I'd have been a bit jealous, but just wish I was more organized. Nothing about you. :)

Unfortunately, there's no Michael's around here.

bichonpawz said...

Those of us who know and love you, Kellan, just KNOW that you would never EVER go anywhere with one of those stupid old lady carts. It's just not YOU!! Personally, I love, love, love the black and white polka dotted bags!!

If someone were annoyed with you for something that petty, I would think they were really annoyed with themselves for not thinking of it first.

I would have been the same way. I hate not having everything in it place, more so when I am traveling.

The bags are wonderful! I love the polka dots.
