Man Oh Man!

Little Billy is not a very big boy.

His daddy is right at 6'.

His granddaddy on his daddy's side is 6'2".

He's got a few uncles that are 6' or more.

Little Billy's mama is 5'3" and his mama's sister - Little Billy's aunt - is 5'2".

One of Little Billy's grandmothers is 5' even.

It's hard to tell how tall Little Billy will end up being - giving that there are both short people and tall people all around him.

For now ...

Little Billy is ...

Little.

Anyways ...

At dinner recently, I asked Little Billy, "So ... are you going to go to work with Daddy tomorrow?"

Before Little Billy could answer, Alexis spoke up and said, "I want to go - I'll go to work with Daddy tomorrow."

I smiled.

Little Billy looked at his small sister and said, "I don't think you could go. It's not a place for girls. It's a place for men."

I smiled.

I said, "Men?"

Little Billy smiled and said, "Yes - men," very confidently.

Alexis laughed at this comment.

I looked over at my little boy and noticed his small nose and little hands and tiny face. I said, "You're still only a boy," trying hard not to crush his manly ego.

"I'm almost a man," he took a hunkin' bite of his pizza.

I smiled.

"When will you be a man?" I watched him shove the pizza into his mouth like any MAN would do.

He giggled. "I don't know - soon," he answered sternly, looking me right in the eye.

Alexis couldn't help herself. She giggled uncontrollably. I nudged her under the table. She said, through all her giggles, "You're ... you're ... only ... e-lev-en years old," pronouncing her words very clearly and laughing.

Little Billy smiled. "What do you know? I'm more of a man than you are."

Alexis, searching for a great come-back, looked up at me for assistance.

On the upside ... I couldn't help her much. I couldn't resist but say, "Sorry, Hon - He's got ya there!"

Billy smiled, a manly smile.

Alexis grumbled - frowned - and went back to eating her pizza.

Boy do I hear you on that one! Blake is extremely TINY for his age and that's a rough thing for a boy. Even though he was a 8 lb 6 oz baby, he's always been in the bottom 10% on both height and weight.

His brothers are 6'1" and 5'10" and I have cousins that range from 6'1" to 6'8", even my girl cousins are 5'10" but I'm afraid he'll always be swimming in the shallow end of the gene pool like me - I'm 5'4" (on a good day).

It bugs me because I don't think that small men are taken as seriously as tall men. People always refer to him as "cute" rather than the "handsome" my older son got.

Oh well, ya get what ya get and ya don't throw a fit! Guess we'll just have to make the best of it.

I think all men are actually still boys.

So then, using that logic reversely, I think Billy has a mighty, fine point!

I just love your Little Billy stories..he's such a cute little man. ;)

How can anyone read this and not smile? It's adorable! I think little Billy is well on his way to being a fine man one day... no matter how tall he ends up being.

Little Billy,
I does not matter if you are a big man. It only matters that you are a great man and I don't see you having a problem with that.

That's adorable! Such a cute story from two cute kids and one darling momma.
It's not how tall a man is, but how tall he makes others feel... right.

I hope your little man's outward stature one day measures up to his inward one. He will be a giant!

Oh, I loved this story, Kellan! Too funny. Could picture the giggles and everything.

I thought of you so much yesterday. I met Jenn from Juggling Life, Cheri from Blog this Mom & Kalynne from Philosopher Mom. It was fun. I'm still treasuring the time we had at BlogHer. Thanks for being so fun.

I know how Alexis feels...tell her that sometimes we girls just have to let the "men" have the last word whether we want to or not. You're right...he really DID have her there!

Great story! My son was very short until finally, this year, at 15 he started to grow and outgrew his twin sister (who is only 5'4"). He's still hoping for 6' like his grandfathers but I think he's going to be lucky to see 5'9' like his dad. I've tried not to worry over the years saying,"God made you this way for a reason," but sometimes it was hard!

With boys it seems to happen almost overnight, they shoot up and get a gravely voice, and get big feet, in a blink.

it is so cute that little billy is a"man" in his mind:) (lol, and a "red-necked" on at that!!!)
that boy's got self confidence, PLUS!!! and, he's such a precious little boy at the same time.
your little billy always has the ability to make my heart sing and melt it at the same time.

I had a friend who stayed 5'6" for years- in our senior year, he shot up to 6'2". So, there you go. But, either way, you're teaching your kids values; the most important lesson of all.

Your kids are way too cute!! :)

tammy said...

That is cute! Yep, he had Alexis beat on that one.

My 12 year old just shot past my 5'4" height. I'm scared to see just how big this kid will end up!

Man is a state of mind! Too cute.

I haven't been commenting much lately, but oh your blog cracks me up.

Your son is so funny! What a trip he must be to live with.

Hope my son is as sweet and entertaining when he gets his age.

Jenn @ Juggling Life said...

He's staking out his male identity in a house full of females--good for him!

Rosemary Bogdan said...

He had the best comeback of all!! Very clever. And of course, he's absolutely right. He's got that Y chromosome and that makes him more of a man than any of us who don't. How wonderful that he identifies so fondly with his dad.

Bren said...

I'm inclined to agree with Mama Geek.

He is such a cutie!

Kaci said...

How cute is he...it's okay to be lil!! :)

dlyn said...

He will be big soon enough Kellan - even if he doesn't think so!

Kel said...

Ha...yep, he sure did have her with that one! :) Sounds like your little man is chomping at the bit to be a big man soon. One day he will be..my how the time sure does fly!

My son, Jared, is tiny too... My DH is average (5'11"), but I am only 5 feet... I think he got my short gene. He's 10 years old, but only weighs around 50 lbs. All the neighbor kids (who are the same age) tower over him, and his younger brother is the same height and weight... Poor Jared... It really bothers him!

Tracy said...

Unfortunately, he's right. He'll be a man soon. *Sniff* Why don't kids ever just stay little anymore??

So funny! I love their conversations -- always puts a smile on my face.
And I love those sunglasses -- they have a very Elvis look to them!

Ellyn said...

He is such a cute boy/man. I swear I want to squeeze him. Please don't think that is strange. I want to do that to most kids. My kids get sick of it.

kimmy said...

If only they could stay our little boys forever...

Great comeback Little Billy!

Tell him not to give up - the Mountain Man was 5'9" when he graduated high school. By the time he graduated college he was 6'2". And he comes from a short family, so no one knows where all that height came from.
That conversation is too funny. Little Billy knows exactly who he is. Hopefully he can hang onto that confidence. (Although eventually you might have to stop calling him "Little" Billy. Just a thought.)

Monogram Queen said...

Tell Alexis being a man is much over-rated - she's better off being a GIRL LOL!

Joanna said...

Believe me them turning into a man sort of sneaks up and attacks overnight! I thought boys had a cold -their voice changed overnight. Sigh

Helen E.M. Wright said...

So that's the next stage?!? We're just on the 'big boy' one.

Robyn said...

LOL, sibling rivalry at its best.

Billy is a super cutie in those glasses! He look so grown up- LOL! I remember when my daughter and son went through the same brother sister rivalry. It is so much fun!

Mary Beth said...

No matter how you fight it, they insist on growing up, don't they.

Kathryn said...

I just love that Little Billy!

My bro was super tiny until he was a senior in high school. Then he shot up to over 6 feet. :)

Wendi said...

What a cutie!
I mean what a manly man!!!

Kelsey said...

Oh my gosh that is just too cute haha

Cheri @ Blog This Mom! said...

Too cute for words! But the words were perfect anyway. Kellan, so well told.

Rachel said...

Great post about Billy. Poor Alexis for not having a come back but he did not leave much room for one.

I tried to access your site for the past 3 days and the internet said that it could not find your site. Strange. So glad all is well and I could read some tales today.

Amanda said...

So cute! Billy got his sister on that one. He is definatly on his way to becoming a great young man.

I knew a kid, who, honest to goodness, grew ten inches in one summer! I was a full head taller than him at the beginning of the summer, and when the next school year started, he was 2-3 inches taller than me!!!

Michelle said...

HI-larious! He's got the right attitude, regardless of how tall he ever gets. Good kid!

Shari/"Whiger" said...

It would be hard to make a comeback on that one.

Sometimes boys don't grow as fast as girls do, but then they end up with BIG growth spurts.

Nicki said...

He's more of a man than his baby sister? Hmm, little Billy, not so sure thats a compliment!

Darla said...

Cute! :)

Well that was cute! I don;t know what happened to my kid! I am short. Dad is short. Bean is well a bean stalk!!!!

Love the pic of your little man!
