It's Getting Harder And Harder To Smooze That Boy

It was a long morning.

It was that day where my son had to go to his school to get his schedule - his books - his locker - his gym uniform - his lunch ticket, etc., etc., etc.

It was also the day that my twin daughters had to go up to their school and get their schedules - their lockers - their lunch tickets - etc., etc., etc.

It was PREP DAY!

I was exhausted.

I was hungry.

Once we finished at the schools, I drove the troops over to a little sandwich shop for lunch.

We climbed out of the van, headed into the shop and stood in line at the counter.

We looked over the menu.

I already knew what I would have, as I had eaten there many times and was very much looking forward to my regular order.

The girls made their decision and began to place their orders at the counter.

Little Billy, standing at my side, tells me, "I want a BLT - that's what I want," and tries to walk away, but I stop him.

I put my hand on his shoulder, "I don't think they have BLTs," I say - not really knowing. "Why don't you and I share a sandwich and split a salad?" I suggest.

"Okay," he agrees. "I want a BLT," he repeats his desires again.

"I don't think they have BLTs," I say again - trying to get him off the idea - I say, "Why don't we split a cucumber sandwich?" I offer this idea in a high pitched voice so as to make the idea seem *spectacular* and just as I finish with my suggestion, my mouth begins to water at the thought of their delicious cucumber sandwich and scrumptious salad.

*cue crickets chirping and small boy gets blank look on his face*

"Wh-aaat?" he looks so bewildered.

"Yes - it is de-licious," I try to sound convincing. "I've had it many times."

The sixth grade boy in front of me says ..."I. Don't. Want. A. Cu-Cum-Ber. Sandwich!" he pronounces each word very clearly. "Who. Eats. Cu-Cum-Ber. Sandwiches. Anyway?" he is starring up at me, so confused - so worried I am going to MAKE him eat this sandwich he does not want. "I've never even heard of a cu-cum-ber sandwich. Cu-Cum-Ber?," he makes a gagging noise and shakes his head.

On the upside ... I knew, when I mentioned the cu-cum-ber sandwich to the small boy, that my odds were not going to be good getting him to agree. And ... he didn't. I didn't have the heart to force an 11 year old boy to eat a sandwich that is normally reserved for grandmas, tea parties and Junior League luncheons - nope! We ordered a ... BLT.

I love cucumber sandwiches although the man next to us at our Clemson tailgate turned his nose up and rolled his eyes when he heard me say "cucumber sandwiches."

Mmmm cucumber sandwiches! Only the smoked salmon with cream cheese are better! Although, I could actually go for a BLT soon. I haven't had one in ages. But It needs to be a BLAT. I need my avocado on that one.

He knows not what he's missing, but the cucumbers do go down a little better with a thin slice of pastrami, a lettuce leaf, and a hunk of cheddar on a kaiser roll. "-)

Hi Kellan,

I've been out of town and catching up. I love cucumber sandwiches but understand how a young boy wouldn't be too crazy about it. Hope you are doing well.

My son would have asked, "Do I look like a metrosexual to you?!"

My favorite summertime sandwich is cucumber, avocado, and cream cheese on whole wheat bread. YUM! But my family looks at me like I'm crazy when i offer to make them one. They just don't know what they are missing.

cucumber sandwiches rock, kellan!!! but, i have a feeling that even if you had talked little billy into splitting one with you, he probably wouldn't have liked it... cu-CUM-BER sandwiches are not exactly boy food, HA!!!

With the thousands of tomatoes we grew this year we have had our feel of BLT's, but I have never tried a cucumber sandwhich. We grew hundreds of those too.

HAAAAAAA! See I myself would LOVE a cucumber sandwich, but this reminds me of my hubby and I going to High Tea at the Empress in Victoria BC. He was SO not impressed with the food which consisted of cucumber sandwiches and teensy pastries that he went and got two hot dogs promptly afterward and still bitches about that stupid high tea / cu-cum-ber sandwich experience!!! boys. hehe.

Poor Lil Billy. I am sorry but I can just see the look on his face when he thought this sandwich was going to be his only choice. I am glad they had BLT's.

Have a great week,

I just realized that I no longer have as much say on what Taylor wears or halloween costumes, etc. It's a tough thing.

Maybe if you had put bacon on it? Bacon can make anything taste better - even cu-cum-bers.

Lately I've wanted to try a cucumber sandwich, but no one around here serves it. It sounds so tasty!

But as for Billy, he is a kid that knows what he wants. Blt's are tasty too! Mmmmmm!

I have been to tea parties for fundraisers but I think I have eaten other things and not seen cucumber there either. Damn, I guess I am missing something-just like billy

Although I might try this with my kid too. Guilty.

Ah I've been missing Little Billy.
My guess is that you loved that BLT more than you would have the cuke anyway. Little Billy will never let you become a boring little old lady. And thank God for it
