Reflection

I am not a refined woman.

I am what they would call - rough around the edges.

I know this.

I think I have a smooth voice, but when I hear my voice recorded ... it is raspy and it is not the voice I hear inside my head.

I think I have gentle motions, but when I see myself on film ... I move abruptly and without grace.

I seldom care or wonder what people think of me, but if I do ... I imagine that they see me as unapproachable and distant.

When I look in the mirror, I see a vision that is reverse of how the world sees me. Not just because it is a mirrored image, but because ... I am not the same outwardly as I am in.

I know this.

When I look at the things I have done right in my life ...

I am proud to have met the challenge and achieved the goals.

When I look at the things I am ashamed of, I am ...

Ashamed.

In reality ...

I have only my children to prove my worth ...

It is true.

No matter what money I have made or monuments I have built in honor of myself ...

I have only the success of their lives on which to base ...

The success of mine.

I am not a refined woman ...

I am rough around the edges.

My children are not refined either, but ...

They are my greatest achievement and ...

They are ...

A reflection of me.

*The beautiful drawing above was done by my precious daughter, Courtney. She is more accomplished and ... more magnificent ... than I could ever hope to be. I am very proud of how she reflects on me.

I never thought I would be a mom, but now two kids in two years...(well five years ago)....you have put into words those feelings I feel!

Well Hell Kellan Darlin'

She has it right on, as far as I'm concerned.

And that is all there is to it.

Wow! She has such an amazing gift! It's beautiful! You've done a wonderful job!

Wow, that is incredible. I'd be happy with half that talent. The picture at the bottom is really cool too.

Such an amazing drawing. I love how it's positioned on the page too. Pass my congratulations on the artist please.

WOW, Kellan. She has some serious talent.

I think I might have to disagree on your sole worth being your children. You add much more value than that; don't sell yourself short.

And yep, Courtney does some NICE work. Art is a talent I definitely don't have, and I admire it in others. I wouldn't have guessed that was done by a high schooler.

Wow! That is one seriously awesome piece of art. Courtney rules the paper!

Kellan, I get you. I think the best I've ever done is wrapped up tight in my children. They motivate me. They inspire me. They are the best part of me. I don't think that will change, and I am fine with it.

It's gorgeous--she is certainly talented.

Guess what, Kellan? Your life isn't over yet! I firmly believe there's plenty of time to do something else that's just as important as raising great kids. That's what will have me graduating from college and starting a teaching career at 45 years young! Find your dream and follow it.

Ha! It's funny how you see yourself. I think though that you come across more as you imagine than what you see in a mirror or on video or hear in a recorded version of your voice. How you described yourself as how you think you sound, look, come across is how you do come across. But maybe it is different than what is inside. That is probably true for all of us!

Your daughter has some amazing talent! I thought that was a snapshot!

You have amazing talent too.

You're too hard on yourself. I'll tell you what though, and I might have said this before...Hank and I often reflect on our lives and how it doesn't matter how wonderful any of our personal accomplishments have been, nothing...NOTHING we've done has ever made us as proud as our children and their accomplishments and victories. We have been SO blessed!

Beautiful drawing and post. Congrats to Courtney on this talent, I have trouble drawing stick figures.

Have a wonderful weekend.

PS: We like them rough around the edges here.

Aren't we always thrilled when our children not only live up to the talent we know they have, but also lead lives full of grace and integrity? My greatest ministry is the one I share with my husband toward our children, and I'm thankful that God blessed us with the opportunity to raise them to Him. Your post highlights that thought brilliantly.

I hate seeing myself or hearing my voice too. We are our own worst critics. Good thing we have our children to make us look a little better. Courtney is very talented.

Wow. Awesome drawing. She is obviously very talented. Our children are indeed our greatest work. But don't you think our worth transcends however our children might turn out? I know people whose children have made huge mistakes but I still think mom is just as cherished by God as ever.

Wow Kellan, she's so young to have such an incredible talent! That's more like a "gift" than a "talent".

Wow!

I think other people see you as more refined than you see yourself.

Tell Courtney she's got fabulous talent.

being a mother and raising caring human beings of value is the most important work anyone can do. It is certainly the most creative soul satisfying work of my life.
Your children are a testament to your well lived life my dear Kellan. Bravo

Beautiful drawing and beautiful words Kellan.
I know precisely what you mean. In the end, all else matters very little. It is our children that we have vested our entire selves in and that is what will last.
Kellan you are absolutely the most "heartistic" blogger I've read. I love to read your posts; I look forward to them each day.

You know, Kellan Renee, I LOVE "rough around the edges" people. Of course, I think that is more how you see yourself, rather than the way other people see you. Either way, I LOVE "rough around the edges" and see it as more "a diamond in the rough." And diamonds of any sort are okay with me :). For sure, I know MY blunt, rough around the edges self would still love to hang out with YOUR rough around the edges self :).

And that is SOME talent Courtney has...incredible! I'd buy that.
