After I got the call ...
I had visions.
Visions of the boy in the school bathroom - hugging the toilet.
Visions of the boy sitting in his classroom - slouched over in a metal chair - whimpering in pain.
Visions of the boy lost in the hallways - searching for a phone to call home.
Searching for the nurse's office.
Searching for the bathroom.
Searching his mind for reasons to ... get out of ... going to the rest of his classes.
The boy's father called me ...
"The boy called - he's sick. Can you go pick him up?" he said.
"It's the second week of school!" I exclaim. "He can't come home."
"He's sick - he called me," the boy's father explains.
"Where'd he call from?"
"The nurse's office. I gotta go," and he hangs up.
I call the school.
"Is my son in your office with a stomach ache?" I ask the nurse.
"What's he look like?" she asks, not recognizing his name.
"He's small, with dark hair," I offer.
"Oh ... he was here a bit ago - I sent him back to P.E. to get a pass," she says.
*I am still in my pajamas.*
*I am happy in my pajamas.*
*I am not ready to get out of my pajamas.*
And ..
I am only into the early morning of my 7th day at home without children - enjoying my coffee - not yet READY to give up this new trend we have going - this ... back-to-school-for-the-kids-which-means-plenty-of-alone-time-for-mom - trend!
And ...
I am not so convinced that the boy is as sick as he is ... more likely ... tired.
"He's not one to miss school," I explain to the nurse, "If he's called home - he must not feel well. But ... it's the first of school ... I need to encourage him to stay if he can."
"Yes," she concurs.
"I guess he broke some rules," I suggest - realizing he hadn't gotten a pass - realizing he called from the gym - realizing he just sort of left his class and likely roamed around until he found her office.
She laughs. "It's okay."
"He's just wandering the halls - not good," I say, and giggle.
"He'll get it. They are all lost for a while. He is cute, though," she laughs again.
"Was there blood coming from his ears?" I then ask.
She hesitates.
She answers ... "No," and then chuckles nervously.
I guess I shouldn't have asked that.
On the upside ... She never called back. He never called back. He went on back to class and ... I'll bet, if someone were to ask him, he'd have to admit that .... he got that telepathic message I sent him ---- "SON, IT'S MOM. I'M STILL IN MY JAMMIES. UNLESS YOU'VE GOT BLOOD OOZING FROM YOUR EARS ... GET YOUR CUTE SELF ... BACK. TO. CLASS! LOVE YA - OVER AND OUT!"

I'll have to remember to give my wee ones that warning when they get old enough to think about wanting to come home when they aren't really sick. The poor nurse!
It always amazes me the difference between moms and dads in terms of being able to read kids and their motives!
LOL. I've had to make that decision so many times. I have one child with a sensitive stomach who also really doesn't enjoy school. She's quite convincing. "Mom, I feel REALLY TERRIBLE!" My response--- "Terrible enough to stay in bed all day, no computer, no TV? Because if you really feel terrible you need to get a LOT of rest." Doesn't work. She usually opts to stay in bed. Oh dear.
Can you imagine all the excuses those poor nurses must hear in a week!? OY!
I do miss those p.j. days!
I do miss those p.j. days!
I'm glad there was no blood...for your sake...so you could stay in jammies. ;) haha.
Ha. He so got the message. LOL.
A year ago, I would so not be able to relate to this post for I had no kids in school. And now, with one in school I understand completely.
Teehee... PJs are comfy!
That is one of the funniest stories ever. And I so know what you mean! There are some days I don't even get dressed until it's time to go pick them up (shhhh!)
My first grader is already trying to come up with excuses of why he can miss school. I don't like it one bit.
KEEP BELIEVING
Been there. Done that.
Good job.
Hi Kellan
I’m cleaning the master closet this weekend, but I sneak away periodically to read a few blogs. (Hey, a girl needs a break every once in awhile! Especially from a job I don’t enjoy…at all!) It’s been fun catching up with you. I hope you had a good weekend.
Hugs!
Kat
I often ask "Is there blood?!?!?" Especially if it's during "mommy-time".
:)De
Your upside cracked me up.
I love it! I tell Boo the same thing. Unless you are bleeding from ears or eyes don't bug me at work. Strep and pink eye too, I guess. If they have too...
So this is what I have to look forward to, hmm? ;)
You handled this like a trooper!!
You handled this like a trooper!!
You handled this like a trooper!! I hope I would have done the same thing.
funny well he at least had a couple minutes out of class
I do NOT blame you one bit! You need your mom time!!!
That was such a great post! Honest, real, and a tad humorous. Love your posts!
I am laughing too hard to even write a coherent response.
I know how you feel... To continue staying in your jammies is more fun than going out...
Thought I was the only one around that whoops and hollers and doesn't shower till 2 when the kids go back to school? All these moms crying when one goes off to kindergarten. NOT me!
And the visual of your bad self in jammies is lovely. How's the kitty?
I'm with you - no sickness for at least a month!
My Mum had a rule... if we came home sick or asked to stay home sick we were to go straight back to bed and not get out. No tv, no books, no games, nothing but sleep. Being an active kid, it was more fun at school. :)
You are so creative in your writing...and thinking! You are a unique and wonderful writer! So fun and so enjoyable.
You remind me of Moms in the old days, "if you're conscious and not bleeding, you'll be alright." I reckon it's a good indication of survival. :-) Around here it's Nanaw who's still in pjs and gets the call.
I am relieved to hear there was no blood oozing. LOL. Our rule here is if you are not bleeding, no fever over 101 and no broken bones then school is a requirement.
Hopefully Lil Billy is ready for another Monday.
Hugz
Blood, puke, or broken bones protruding from skin. That's our rule. Don't call me otherwise. 'Course, since I homeschool, (sometimes in my jammies;) I am the nurse as well. And I know better than to call the Mom unless they are REALLY sick!
Heehee!
Both of mine came down with colds within the first week back. They were begging to stay home.
Me....no fever, you're going!
I've got blogging to do (only kidding of course)
:) hehe Telepathic message...do you think that will work when he is a teenager? Better yet, does it work on your older girls? I'd really like to learn that trick!
Have a great day...
~K
I love being in my jammies too.
My dad was so strict about staying home - only if I had a temperature, which I very rarely do, even if I feel like total crap!
LOL!:)
Mommas know their boys.;)
Blood oozing out of ears... Got it. I will have to remember that for future reference! HA!
That was too cute of a post! I remember when I was a child and I would call sick from school. My Mom quickly realized I called in sick every time I had to take a test. Lol. That didn't last for long!
Where do you buy your jammies? I want some of those. They sound wonderful. Cute story and boy :)
lol. poor billy! He is cute though, I have to agree. :D
♥ Too cute! :)
How funny that cute little Billy even has the nurse charmed. I wonder if nerves are getting to him, even though he seems so cool about the whole thing.
Enjoy your day Kellen,
Kristen
Wow, what a smart post!
Thank you for writing it.
My daughter always has something wrong with her too. I told her the same thing!!!!
Glad he made it the rest of the day!
Kimmy
LOL! I so remember doing this to my parents!! LOL! :)
I'll have to remember to give mine that warning too!
So cute! I would have had the same thoughts. You gotta love that telepathic communication. :)
I just noticed your "Please be Nice" sentiment! Love it! And enjoy your YOU time...it is very important. Guess Little Billy got your telepathic messsage...LOL
ugh!!! just the THOUGHT of middle school p.e. makes my stomach hurt, kel:O tee-hee, but then again, i was p.e. challenged!!!
love,
dani
ps i hope he is feeling better:)
I'm always here when it's about little Billy.
Poor thing, he does try I must say.
I love that you asked if there was blood coming from his ears. :)
My son calls every day. He is just fine within an hour of getting home. sigh!
What a hoot. I feel certain that the (drama) Queen will come up with a variety of stories. And yeah, I will still be in my pjs. I rarely get dressed on the days we don't go anywhere. It saves on laundry.
I know, I don't think any of us like to be interupted within our daily routine! I'm taking future notes on how to handle this...{wink, wink}
But he's just so darn cute! However, jammie time is sacred and should not be disturbed. Good call! :)
I'm glad he ended up feeling better...and that you didn't have to get out of your jammies. ;) Pajamas should be everyday wear. I would absolutely love that.
Well, Mom, he tried!! Too funny. :)
I have sent that same telepathic message to my kids at school too!! :)
I got the same kind of call today and decided to let him stick it out the last 20 minutes because I didnt want to miss the View haha
love your comment message!! the one that says be NICE! :D
what is ur secret? how do u get so many people commenting you?!
woohoo for pj's!

I think you guessed it right, he was just too tired and just wanted to come home. Good call too!
Sometimes kids just need a break from whatever is going on!
Oh yes....I've had that conversation a couple of times.
He IS cute though :)
I got the same call....4th day of school. I wasn't in my pj's, but darnit I was watch'n the Days of Our Lives. Hadn't seen it all summer.
So glad he didn't have blood oozing out his ears and you didn't have to leave the comforts of your home.
I can SO relate! I'm really getting used to loving my "alone" time. I'm not looking forward to the first sick days.
Blood oozing from the ears reminds me of a "classic" movie- Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It was a famous line in our house for years!
Oh Kellan ~ you have
made me laugh so much with this post ~ thank you!!
I must try and do that telepathic thing one day ~ it may just work on my kids too.
love and hugs XXXXX
The phone rings. I look at the caller ID and it says Unknown Caller. No. No. NO. Not the school-no. My stomach clenches knowing I have to answer it.
No matter what, it's school. Might be the nurse. Might be the principal. Usually not a good call.
I am the same way. If I'm not dressed yet, there is no way I'm going to be there in a minute.
A few weeks ago I took my daughter to the ER. It was right after I'd washed all of my makeup off and put on my pajamas. I told her I must REALLY love her to get dressed and NOT put my makeup back on. I think that was a first for me.
Little Billy reminds me so much of my Legare at that age...and your parenting styles (you and your hubby)of ours.
