Trolls In Art Class

When Alexis was little(er), ... she used to believe that every show on TV could be rewound to watch over - because her favorite movies on VHS tapes could be rewound to be watched again and again.

It took a while to get her to understand that this was .. not so.

When Alexis was little(er) ... she used to think that anytime you needed money you should just go up to a cash machine and extract money - it was there - free - for the taking.

It took a while to get her to understand that this was ... not so.

When Alexis was little(er) ... she used to believe that dinosaurs were real and lived in the forest with the fairies and the trolls.

One day, not long ago, Alexis was near me in the kitchen.

She was sitting at the table drawing a picture while I prepared dinner.

"That's really a good picture," I said, as I walked by her on my way across the room.

She looked up at me and smiled, "Did you like art when you were a little girl?" she asked.

"I did," I answered, "I loved art."

She straightened up in her chair ...

She tilted her head ...

She said ...

"Was art your favorite class or ... did you like computer class better?"

On the upside ... When I was little ... I lived in the forest with the dinosaurs and the fairies. And ... when I went to school ... I took typing class with all the other little trolls and we learned to type on brand new Smith Corona typewriters. Occasionally, we heard rumors of giant computers that would one day take over the world, but ... we never worried about such things - out in the forest. We were too busy fixing our CORRECT-O Tape, changing out typewriter ribbons and ... chipping arrow heads with flat rocks ... in Art class.

It took a while to convince Alexis that this was indeed ... SO!

That's hilarious! And to think that she's too little to comprehend the world of typewriters or the green screened computers, plain Mario Brothers hooked up with cords to the television in that big wooden crate! Our kids don't even recognize a rotary telephone. Am I getting old? Or are our kids just too young? I'm going with the latter.....

Brenda said...

Heck, she'd never believe that I learned to type using a dinosaur, a manual Underwood. :-)

Same, same here.

I bought an old electric typewriter at a garage sale when the kids were little. Oh how they love that thing.

Tricia said...

Oh that's funny. I remember how excited I was to get an electric typewriter for my freshmen year of college. I was so high tech and all that...hah!

Did you keep a straight face? My kids asked me a question of back in my day... could have smack them. :)

Kami said...

Yeah, kids, they really have no idea how hard it was for us when we were kids, do they?

;-)

and boy do I like computers better than typewriters.

JCK said...

Oh, I remember those days...frolicking in the forest and typing class...so glad computers took over!

Loved this post's rhythm, Kellan!

What a great post Kellan! I actually learned on a NON-electric typewriter...in my cave...LOL!

So funny!

I take great pleasure in the fact that I won the typing award when I was a Jr. in High School.

I rocked at changing that ribbon out and feeding that paper in just perfectly! :)

This reminds me of a story I'll be sharing on my blog sometime today.

Haha, computer class when I was little consisted of playing on Oregon Trail on the OOOOOLD Apple Macintosh's, and when I was slightly older, playing number crunchers. (great games, both)

Kellan, I tried to explain to my students the other day the I could not have even IMAGINED the Internet when I was young. The thought of it was so far beyond the reaches of anything I knew. My point was that they (my students) don't know what will be in their futures either. Basically we are preparing them for jobs that don't even exist yet.
They looked at me like I came from the forest of dinosaurs and magical fairies.
Oh well.

When I was little we walked 5 miles to school uphill- both WAYS! (:

Love this one, as always, K!

O' Well ! !

I hear you on this one!
My favorite question was, "A record album? What's that?" Eeeek.

LOL! That is one funny story.

I really loved this! I was laughing, remembering me in typing class. Oh, and I remember in college, hearing rumors of this thing called the world wide web, and saying "Whatever". I have to admit, part of me misses typewriters - that noise they made when you struck the keys. Living in the forest with those dinosaurs wasn't so bad.

Oh, also, I wanted to thank you for all the fantastic advice you gave me about decorating! I really appreciate you taking the time to write all that, and you gave me some great tips. You are a great friend.

I know I too, lived way back when without computers. But I honestly have no idea how I survived.

That is soooo funny! That reminds me of when my son Kyle saw a picture of me on the fridge in my younger days. He said, "Mom, was that picture taken when you used to be prettier?" LOL!

What ever happened to typing 101 in high school? Kids today type faster than I do and they don't even know what home row is. They type with two fingers! And kids can't even laugh when you mention driving around in your Pinto, listening to Styx on 8 track. They have no idea what any of them was : )

My kids sometimes make me feel older than dirt with their questions (e.g., What's Atari?)

This reminds me of the a time when I mentioned the CARD CATALOG in the library.

My students' mouths hung open,"You had to do WHAT???"

Yes, after we looked up the item we wanted via alphabetical order (wha-huh?)we had to go down to the deep dark cavern, pull actual BOOKS using the Dewey Decimal System (Dewey, who?)and even magazines, dust off the covers, LOOK for the page we needed and either CHECK IT OUT (YES, a real honest-to-goodness book) OR PHOTOCOPY the pages.

The horror of it all . . .

This is a good one, Kellan. I can't imagine all that I will have to tell my kids I did when I was littler. Like use a card catalog and a checkout card at the library. I remember thinking how arhaeic it was that my dad used a SLIDE RULE. And he was an Engineer. Holy Cow! How did he do it?? We had to have scientific calculators when I was in college. These days they have to have laptops.

KEEP BELIEVING

OMG - you gave me flashbacks of being in school! That was hilarious. I remember that Correct-o tape, those typewriters. OMG. That makes me feel old. Too funny.

times, oh how they change!

LOL I KNOW!!!!!! I tell my kids I remember when there were no calculators or color tvs, much less computers, ipods, and practically everything else electronic that we have now. It's amazing, isn't it?

I think that's your funniest "on the upside" so far. LOL!! That made me laugh out loud. I'm "only" 30 and learned to type in 9th grade on a type writer. There were definately computers in the school, but they hadn't quite reached that point to have a computer lab yet.

duchess said...

That sounds typical of conversations around my house. My daughter asked the other day.....did they have cars when you were little?
Ugh! I'm not THAT old little Gracie.

I always told mine I rode my dinosaur to school. My son used to wish it was true.

Oh yeah. And food actually had to be reheated on the stove or in the oven and it took FOREVER!

Funny post!

Ouch! I'm so not looking forward to the first time I hear a question like that. I mean, c'mon, I listened to records growing up. Mister Man has CD books he listens to. Hmmm.

MamaGeek @ Works For Us said...

Ah, yes. I used to have a typewriter too, back in the day when I swore I would become a writer. HA!

Loved this post K! SO!

LOL!!! Isn't it weird to think that computers and the Internet are just part of life for preschoolers these days? When I was little I think I knew someone with a computer and maybe I touched it once, but I didn't get to use computers in school until I was in seventh grade... and even that was mostly just typing! Now Little Bear has her own browser on my laptop so she can surf the net whenever she wants! Crazy, huh!

Ellyn said...

When I was in high school, we got a whole room full of computers. It was an exciting day. But really they were just glorified type writers. They pretty much had a keyboard and a monitor. It was pretty exciting though. We had computers

Valarie said...

HA! You lived in the forest with dinosaurs and fairies...you made a funny.

Hey! I took that class too - good thing we took that typing class back in the good ol' days; if not, our blogging could take up a LOT more time...

So many memories, I hated that stupid Correct O tape!

*rofl* ... Kids have a way of making us feel old, huh? ... Yesterday I told Josh about something we had when I was a kid, and he said that he wishes that he could have lived in the "olden days". *lol*

Yep, I must be about your age because I, too, lived in the forest with dinosaurs, typed on Smith Corona typewriters with correction tape, and heard RUMORS about giant computers! This was a great post.
